Miss America Requirements: Age Limit, Rules, and Who Can Enter Miss America

Miss America requires you to be a woman who is at least 18 and no older than 28 during the competition year, a United States citizen, unmarried, not pregnant, and not the biological or adoptive parent of a child. You must live, work full-time, or study full-time in the state you represent, and the organization asks for 120 consecutive days of residency before you compete. There is no height requirement and no weight requirement. Unlike Miss USA, Miss America still scores a 90 second talent performance, worth 20 percent of your score, and you cannot apply to the national final directly: you win a local competition, then your state title, then you go to Miss America.

Miss America and Miss USA get confused constantly, and the eligibility rules are where the difference actually bites. Miss USA spent 2023 to 2026 dismantling its restrictions: the age cap went, the ban on married contestants and mothers went. Miss America kept nearly all of them. If you read one organization's rules and assumed they applied to the other, you either talked yourself out of a competition you qualify for or planned for one you do not. What are the requirements for Miss America?

Seven things decide eligibility: age, gender, citizenship, marital status, parental status, state residency, and the talent round you have to be able to fill. Nothing about height, weight or measurements appears anywhere in the rules.

What is the age limit for Miss America?

The Miss America age limit is 28. For the 2026 competition the organization published it precisely: delegates must be no older than 28 as of September 30, 2026, and no younger than 18 as of September 1, 2026. State organizations often restate the same band against a December 31 cutoff, so check the wording on your own state's page rather than assuming the national date applies to you. Virginia is the clearest warning here: its contestant page publishes a cap of 27 measured at its own state competition date, a year tighter than the national rule and anchored to a different event, which we set out in full in how to become Miss Virginia.

That 28 cap is the single most common reason people are ruled out. It is also where Miss America now diverges sharply from its closest rival: Miss USA removed its upper age limit entirely, so a 34 year old who cannot enter Miss America can enter Miss USA. How old are Miss America contestants?

Every Miss America contestant is an adult. The rules put the field between 18 as of September 1 and 28 as of September 30 of the competition year, and in practice most state titleholders are college students or recent graduates in their early to mid twenties. The organization does not publish an official average contestant age.

Be careful with the numbers circulating online. Because the upper limit moved to 28 only for the 2026 competition, any average calculated from older cycles reflects a band that stopped at 26, and most of the figures you will find repeated were worked out from winners rather than from the full contestant field. Treat them as trivia, not as a benchmark to measure yourself against.

The pageant itself is far older than its contestants. Miss America was first held in 1921, when Margaret Gorman won at 16, and after the 1933 revival Marian Bergeron won at 15. Minimum ages came later precisely because of that, and the band sat at 18 to 26 for decades before the current guidelines extended it to 28. Can you be married or have children and compete in Miss America?

No. Miss America contestants must be unmarried at the time of competition, must certify they are not pregnant, and must not be the biological or adoptive parent of a child. This is a live rule, not a historical footnote, and it is the second most common disqualifier after age.

There is one nuance worth knowing. The rule was rewritten in 1999. Before that, contestants had to certify they had never been married. Since 1999 the test is your status at the time you compete, which means a divorced woman is eligible while a currently married woman is not. The parental rule has no such carve-out: if you have a child, biological or adopted, you cannot compete.

If that rules you out, it does not rule out the category. Miss USA accepts married women, divorced women and mothers since its 2023 change, and the Mrs. America pageant is built specifically for married women with no upper age limit at all. Is there a height or weight requirement for Miss America?

There is no height requirement and no weight requirement for Miss America. The organization publishes neither, and neither appears on state directorship eligibility pages. The 5 foot 4 and 5 foot 7 minimums that circulate online are borrowed from commercial fashion modeling and from a handful of overseas national franchises, and they have never applied here.

Miss America also dropped its swimsuit competition in 2018, which removed the round that made body measurements feel like an unwritten rule in the first place. The scored rounds today are talent, private interview, evening wear with an onstage question, and a social impact pitch. How tall is Miss America?

There is no single answer, because there is no rule. Miss America sets no minimum or maximum height, does not measure contestants as part of qualifying, and does not publish contestant heights, so winners have varied widely across the century. Do you have to live in the state you represent?

Yes, and this trips up more people than it should. You qualify for a state by living there, working there full-time in person, or being enrolled full-time as a student at an accredited school or college in that state. The organization asks for at least 120 consecutive days of residency before the date of competition.

The practical effect is that college students can compete in their school's state rather than their parents' state, and that anyone who moved recently needs to count the days carefully. One warning about that 120 day figure: it is the national standard, and individual states can and do publish something longer. What is the talent requirement for Miss America?

Every Miss America contestant performs a talent, on stage, for 90 seconds, and it counts for 20 percent of the score in each round. This is the requirement that has no equivalent at Miss USA, and it is a genuine barrier: you need something performable and rehearsed, not a hobby you can describe.

Singing, dance and instrumental performance dominate the field because they read well in 90 seconds and are easy to score. Monologues, spoken word, baton, and less common performance skills all appear regularly. What does not work is anything that needs more than 90 seconds to make sense, or that cannot be judged on execution. How is Miss America scored?

Miss America is scored across five phases: private interview at 30 percent, talent or HERStory at 20 percent, health and fitness at 20 percent, evening gown at 20 percent, and the on-stage question at 10 percent. The private interview carries more weight than any other single phase, which surprises most first-time contestants.

Add the interview and the on-stage question together and 40 percent of Miss America is how you talk. Add talent and 60 percent has nothing to do with how you look in a gown. This is the single most useful thing to know before you allocate preparation time, because candidates routinely spend the most money on the phase worth 20 percent and the least effort on the phase worth 30 percent.

The HERStory option matters more than it looks. It lets a candidate who has no performable talent use the same 90 second slot to present her own story and platform work instead, so a stage talent is no longer an absolute barrier to entering the Miss America system. Does Miss America still have a swimsuit competition?

No. Miss America eliminated the swimsuit round in 2018 and has not brought it back. Contestants are no longer scored on physical appearance in swimwear at any level of the system. Miss USA and Miss Universe both kept their swimsuit rounds, which is one of the clearer format differences between the two organizations. How do you enter Miss America?

You cannot apply to Miss America. There is no national entry form. The route runs upward through three levels, and it takes most of a year.

1. Find your state organization. Each state runs its own Miss America affiliate with its own calendar and its own eligibility page. That page, not a blog, is the document that governs you.
2. Compete locally. Most states require you to win a local title first. 3. Win your state title. The state winner becomes that state's delegate to Miss America. One person per state, per year.

Alongside all of this you develop a social impact initiative, a cause you work on and are questioned about, and most contestants fundraise for it. You will pitch that initiative to judges, to local sponsors and to your state organization, usually more than once, so it pays to turn your written plan into a short deck you can actually walk someone through in five minutes rather than re-explaining it from scratch every time. What are the Miss America's Teen age requirements?

Miss America's Teen is the youth division and runs its own age band. For the 2026 competition, delegates must be no younger than 14 as of September 1, 2026 and no older than 18 as of September 30, 2026. The other rules mirror the main competition: unmarried, not a parent, US citizen, and state residency. The teen division also keeps a talent round.

What disqualifies you from Miss America?

In order of how often it happens: being older than 28, being married, having a child, not being a US citizen, and not meeting the 120 day residency test for the state you want to represent. Beyond eligibility, the standard conduct clauses apply, and false statements on an application are grounds for disqualification at any point, including after a title is awarded.

What if you are not eligible for Miss America?

Most people who read this page are here because one of those rules excluded them, usually the age cap or the marital and parental rule. Three honest options:

• Miss USA if you are over 28, married, divorced or a mother, and you still want the traditional national route. It has none of those restrictions and no talent round.
• Mrs. America if you are married. It requires marriage rather than forbidding it, and has no upper age limit.
• An open online competition if the state residency, citizenship or title-chain requirements are the blocker, or if you simply do not have a year and a travel budget to give this.
