Miss USA rewrote most of its entry rules between 2023 and 2026, and the pages that rank for "miss usa requirements" mostly describe the old rulebook. The age cap is gone. The ban on married contestants and mothers is gone. The height minimum that gets quoted everywhere was never in the official rules to begin with. If you talked yourself out of entering because of something you read three years ago, it is worth reading the current version. Here is what the organization actually asks for, where each rule comes from, and the two different doors into the competition.
What are the requirements for Miss USA?
Six things decide eligibility: age, gender, citizenship, marital and parental status, residency, and which entry route you use. Everything else you have heard, height, weight, measurements, modeling experience, is not a rule.

What is the age limit for Miss USA?
Miss USA sets a minimum age and no maximum. The rules express it as a birth year rather than a number: for the 2026 cycle you must have been born during or before the year 2007, which works out to 18 or older. There is no upper age limit, so a woman of 32 or 45 is as eligible on paper as one of 19. This changed alongside Miss Universe, which removed its own cap of 28 ahead of the 2024 edition.
Watch the birth-year wording rather than doing the arithmetic yourself. Because the cycle runs across two calendar years, "18 by the state pageant" and "born in or before 2007" can give different answers for someone with a late birthday. The birth year is what the organization checks.
This is one of the widest age windows in major pageantry. For comparison, the Miss World age limit stops at 27 and Miss America stops at 28, so women in their late twenties and thirties who assumed they had aged out of everything usually still qualify here.
Is there a height requirement for Miss USA?
No. Miss USA publishes no height requirement and no weight requirement, and there are no measurement standards in the official rules. The 5 foot 7 and 5 foot 8 minimums that circulate online are not rules at all. Some of it is borrowed from fashion modeling, and some of it comes from national franchises in other countries that do impose their own minimums on their own entry forms.
What is true is that recent titleholders have skewed tall, which is a pattern in who tends to enter and place rather than a gate at the door. Nobody measures you against a standard when you apply. Can married women compete in Miss USA?
Yes. Since the 2023 rule change, Miss USA accepts any marital status: unmarried, married, widowed or divorced. This was one of the biggest breaks with pageant tradition in decades, and it is still the rule most people get wrong, because Miss World, Miss Earth and Miss America all kept their unmarried requirements.
If you are married and want the full range of options, note that Mrs. pageants such as Mrs. America are built specifically for married women and have no upper age limit either, so you may be eligible for both.
Can mothers compete in Miss USA?
Yes. The casting rules state that you may compete with or without children, and this applies to biological, adopted and stepchildren alike. Pregnancy during the competition period is handled separately in contestant agreements, so raise it with your state director early if it applies to you.

Do you have to be a US citizen to compete in Miss USA?
Yes, and this one has no flexibility. You must be a citizen of the United States, and if you are selected you must maintain that citizenship through the national pageant. Permanent residents and visa holders are not eligible, no matter how long they have lived in the country. It is the single most common reason an otherwise strong applicant is turned away.
Do you have to live in the state you represent?
It depends on which door you use, and this is the detail almost nobody explains properly.
If you go through a state pageant, yes. State directorships typically require verification of residency in the state, commonly for at least 90 days before the state competition, though some accept full-time student or employment status in the state instead. Rules vary by state, so read that specific directorship's page.
If you go through the national open casting, no. The casting rules say plainly that you are not required to be a resident of a state now or previously in order to take part. For anyone who recently moved, or who lives in a state with a crowded field, open casting is the more flexible route and it is badly underused.

What does it cost to compete in Miss USA?
The organization does not publish a single figure, because most of the money goes to third parties rather than to the pageant. State entry fees, competition wardrobe, a coach if you use one, hair and makeup on competition days, travel and hotel for the state week: a realistic first state season runs into the low thousands, and contestants who compete nationally spend considerably more.
Nearly everyone offsets this with sponsors, usually local businesses who get their logo in a program book and social posts in return. If you go that route, keep the money side tidy from day one. What disqualifies you from Miss USA?
Given how few hard rules remain, the disqualifiers are short. Not being a US citizen ends it. Being under 18, or born after 2007 for the 2026 cycle, ends it. Failing state residency when you enter through a state pageant, rather than through open casting, ends that particular route. Beyond eligibility, false statements on an application and breaches of the conduct clauses in the contestant agreement are the usual causes of a title being withdrawn after the fact.
What does not disqualify you: your height, your weight, your measurements, being married, being divorced, being a mother, having tattoos, or having never competed before. If someone tells you otherwise, ask them to point at the rule.
If Miss USA is not open to you
Citizenship is the wall most readers hit. If you are not a US citizen, no amount of preparation opens that door, and the same is true of the national title requirement at Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Earth: you cannot apply to any of them directly.
