To become Miss Iowa you must first win one of the Miss Iowa organization's local titles, with At-Large entry used only to fill openings left at the state competition, and you must be no older than 28 on September 30, 2027 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2027, while living, working full time in person, or studying full time in Iowa. Miss Iowa USA works almost the opposite way: it has no local pageants, charges a $25 application fee, sets no upper age limit, and accepts married women, pregnant women and mothers. Iowa also runs a Czech-Slovak qualifier in Cedar Rapids and the Iowa State Fair Queen contest, each with its own rules.
That is four doors with four rulebooks, and a fifth that appears to be shut. Everything below was checked in September 2026 against each organization's own published pages. Where an Iowa pageant website has expired, or contradicts itself from one page to the next, we say so rather than smooth it over.
How old do you have to be to compete for Miss Iowa?
For the 2027 competition, Miss Iowa publishes the national Miss America line: you must be no older than 28 on September 30, 2027, and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2027. The same rule applies whether you enter at a local or at the state level.
Those are two different dates, and the gap between them decides real cases. A woman who turns 29 in October 2027 is still inside the rule, because the ceiling is measured at the end of September. Iowa's reigning titleholder shows how close to that ceiling a winner can be: McKenzie Kerry was 27 when she was crowned Miss Iowa 2026.
Eighteen-year-olds get a choice most states do not advertise. Miss Iowa notes that Miss America headquarters allows an 18-year-old a "pivot" year to decide whether to compete in the Teen division or the Miss division, so your birthday alone does not force you into one.
Miss Iowa USA measures age differently. Its application page asks only that a Miss delegate was born in 2008 or earlier and states plainly that there is no age limit. A 35-year-old and a 45-year-old apply on the same terms as a 19-year-old.
Do you have to win a local title to compete for Miss Iowa?
Yes. The organization's competition page says a contestant "must first qualify by winning an official local competition," and that any remaining openings in the state competition may be filled through the At-Large process. At-Large is a backfill, not a second front door, so plan on a local.
Locals run through the fall and winter across the state. The published calendar lists, for example, Miss Polk County on October 18, 2026 in Des Moines. Every Miss Iowa and Miss Iowa's Teen contestant starts at one of these, and some locals set their own geographic eligibility, so read the specific pageant's page before you register.
Miss Iowa USA skips all of that. Its FAQ says there are no preliminary events for the state competition: you apply directly to the state pageant. One practical warning, though. When we checked, the competition information page run by KPC Productions said applications were being accepted, while its application page said registration was closed. With the 2027 date and venue still listed as to be announced, treat the application page as the one that governs and watch it rather than assume the window is open.
Do you have to live in Iowa to compete?
For Miss Iowa, you need to meet at least one of three tests: be a full-time resident of Iowa, be employed full time in person within Iowa, or be enrolled full time at an accredited Iowa school, college or university. The 2027 page does not state a number of days. The Miss America national guidance for the 2026 cycle measured both residency and employment over at least 120 consecutive days before competition, which is the figure to plan around until Iowa says otherwise.
Miss Iowa USA uses a shorter clock and a different structure. Residency must be valid at least 90 days before the state competition, and you must meet at least two of four criteria: you live in Iowa, you are a full-time student in Iowa, you are employed in Iowa, or you have a parent or guardian who lives, attends school or works in Iowa. That fourth test is unusual. An out-of-state college student whose parents live in Cedar Rapids can pair it with a summer job in Iowa.
Something that shows up in neighboring contracts is missing here. The company that produces Miss USA in Kansas, Nebraska and Arkansas writes a 90-day interstate lockout into its rules, which our guide on how to become Miss Kansas walks through. We found no equivalent clause on the Miss Iowa USA pages. The only bar of that kind is that you cannot have competed at Miss Universe or at the national Miss USA pageant before.
Can married women and mothers compete in Miss Iowa USA?
Yes. Under the heading for Miss USA state delegates, the application page says women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children, are able to compete. That is as open as a state pageant in the Miss Universe pipeline gets.
The trap is the next heading down. The lines saying a contestant must never have been married, never had a marriage annulled, never given birth and cannot be pregnant sit under Miss Teen USA State Delegates. Skim the page and you will read them as applying to everyone. We found the same layout in the Vanbros states, and KPC Productions is an unrelated company, so this looks like how the Miss USA state template is written rather than one producer's quirk. Miss Iowa is less clear on paper. Its eligibility text names gender, age and residency and stops there. Other state organizations in the same Miss America system publish two more conditions, United States citizenship and single status with no legal dependents, and Kansas prints both. Assume they apply in Iowa too, and confirm with the Miss Iowa organization before you pay anything.
You can move between the two systems
Iowa has a live example that the two crowns are not a one-way choice. McKenzie Kerry of Des Moines placed second runner-up at Miss Iowa USA in 2022 and first runner-up in 2023, then won Miss Iowa USA on June 23, 2024 and finished in the top 20 at Miss USA 2024. Two years later she won Miss Iowa 2026 on the Miss America side. At Miss America 2027 she sang "God Bless the Child," won a $3,000 preliminary evening gown award, and reached the top 11, which carried a $4,000 award.
That path has a limit built into it. Miss Iowa USA does not take anyone who has already competed at the national Miss USA pageant, so a former Miss Iowa USA who wants another state crown has only the Miss America route left, and its ceiling is 28. Kerry did it at 27, with very little room to spare.
Iowa has four routes, not two
Miss Czech-Slovak Iowa is held with the Houby Days festival in Czech Village in Cedar Rapids, and the next state pageant is set for May 2027. Contestants must be between 16 and 26 before May 1 of the pageant year, single and never married, not expecting a child, a citizen of or eligible to work in the United States, and of full or partial Czech, Moravian, Silesian or Slovak descent (legal adoption also counts). Entry costs $25, plus a $20 membership fee if your family does not already belong to the Czech Heritage Foundation, and entries are due May 1. The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship, which requires attending at least 15 events during the year, and sponsorship to the national Miss Czech-Slovak US pageant in Wilber, Nebraska, next held August 7 and 8, 2027. Iowa is one of only ten states with a qualifier. The Iowa State Fair Queen contest is a route most pageant guides leave out, and in Iowa it is a big one: 103 county fair queens advanced to the 2026 state competition. You cannot apply to it directly. Each entrant must be selected through a competitive queen contest at her county fair, and only fairs belonging to the Association of Iowa Fairs qualify. The 2026 rules set the age at 16 to 21 on August 13, the first day of the fair, require that you have never been married, and ask county queens to live in the county they represent or an adjoining one and to belong to at least one service organization. The entry fee is $450, rising to $500 after April 30. Belle Werner of Tama County won the 2026 title and a $3,000 scholarship from the Iowa State Fair.
Miss Iowa Volunteer is the route that appears to be dormant. The Miss Volunteer America system sets its age window at 17 to 26 as of the day a contestant competes, is crowned or is appointed, scores evening gown, talent, interview and fitness at 25% each, and crowns its national winner in Jackson, Tennessee. But when we checked in September 2026, the Miss Iowa Volunteer website showed an expired hosting page and the national directors list named no Iowa director. If you want this route, contact the national organization first and ask whether Iowa has an active licensee.
What are the phases of the Miss Iowa competition?
Miss Iowa scores preliminaries on interview at 30%, talent at 20%, fitness at 20%, evening wear at 20% and an on-stage question at 10%. On finals night the top ten carry a composite of their preliminary scores worth 30%, then compete again in talent, fitness and evening wear at 20% each and the on-stage question at 10%. Interview is the single largest piece of the preliminaries, and the audience never sees it.
Miss Iowa USA has no talent phase at all. Its FAQ splits the score into interview at 50%, physical fitness at 25% and evening gown at 25%. If you do not sing, dance or play an instrument, that difference alone may pick your system for you.
What does it cost to compete in Iowa?
The Miss America side starts with a national step: every contestant subscribes to the Miss America system through its Club America membership, which costs $49.99 plus fees and renews as a recurring subscription. Miss Iowa does not publish a separate local or state entry fee. In return the organization advertises more than $36,900 in scholarships and cash awards and more than $728,640 in in-kind scholarship opportunities.
Miss Iowa USA charges a $25 application fee, and its FAQ says all fees paid to KPC Productions are non-refundable. It publishes no sponsorship fee. Miss Czech-Slovak Iowa is $25, or $45 with the membership fee. The Iowa State Fair Queen entry is $450, or $500 after April 30.
One thing to know before you win anything. The IRS generally treats a cash prize as taxable income, while a scholarship is tax free only up to what you spend on tuition, required fees and required course materials, and not on costs like room and board. A titleholder whose prize package mixes cash and scholarship money should keep the two apart when she goes to file her taxes online, because they are not treated the same way.
Who is Miss Iowa 2026?
McKenzie Kerry, a 27-year-old Des Moines resident and University of North Carolina at Charlotte business graduate, was crowned Miss Iowa 2026 in June at the state competition in Davenport. Her community service initiative is Get to Work: Practice Makes Professional, built on career readiness workshops that have reached more than 600 students. At Miss America 2027 on September 6, 2026 she won a preliminary evening gown award and finished in the top 11, while Illinois's Kate Dimmett placed second runner-up, as our guide on how to become Miss Illinois notes.
Emily Sutton, 18, a Central DeWitt High School graduate, is Miss Iowa's Teen 2026. On the Miss Universe side, Madeline Erickson holds Miss Iowa USA 2026, three years after she held Miss Iowa Teen USA in 2023, another sign that Iowa contestants move between divisions far more than the rulebooks suggest.

What if you are 29 or older, married, or out of season?
Then three of Iowa's four active routes are closed to you. Miss Iowa stops at 28. The Czech-Slovak pageant stops at 26 and requires that you have never married. The State Fair Queen contest stops at 21. Miss Iowa USA is the exception, with no age ceiling and no marital bar, but it holds one state final a year, it is closed to anyone who has already competed at Miss USA, and its 2027 date had not been announced when we checked.

The calendar is the other obstacle. Miss Iowa crowns in June, Miss Iowa USA ran its 2026 final on May 29 and 30, the Czech-Slovak qualifier is in May, and the State Fair Queen is chosen in August. Miss the window and you wait a year.

It is an online beauty pageant for women of Slavic heritage, and Iowa's Czech roots run through towns such as Protivin, Spillville, Cresco and Clutier. Entry is open at 18 with no upper age limit, married or single, mothers welcome, with no talent piece, no local title, no travel and no entry fee. You build a profile, our moderators approve it, and the public votes. It will not give you a Miss America scholarship and we would not pretend otherwise. What it will do is let you compete this month instead of next June.
