What are the Miss Ohio requirements?
Miss Ohio requires that you are a United States citizen, have always been female, are between 17 and 24, have never been married, have never been pregnant, and have never been convicted of a crime. You need six months of connection to Ohio, a high school diploma or GED by June 30 of the year you compete, and personal involvement with a community or social issue that the organization calls your platform.
Read that list again, because two items on it are unusual. "Never been pregnant" is a stricter test than the no-children rule several other states publish, and it is not the same thing. "Never been convicted of a crime" appears on the Ohio page in plain language where many states bury it in the contestant contract. Neither is a formality, and both are checked.
The platform requirement is the one candidates underestimate. It is not an essay written the week before the local competition. Judges ask what you have actually done, over what period, with whom, and what changed as a result. Pick something you were already involved in rather than something that sounds good on paper.
What is the Miss Ohio age limit?
The Miss Ohio eligibility page lists 17 to 24. The national Miss America 2026 guidelines set the band at no younger than 18 as of September 1 and no older than 28 as of September 30. That is a four year gap at the top, and it is the widest state-versus-national mismatch of any state we have looked at.
In practical terms, a 26 year old sits comfortably inside the national Miss America band and outside what Ohio publishes. If you are 25 or older, do not assume the national figure covers you. Write to the state office, ask about your specific competition year, and get the answer in writing before you pay a local entry fee or commission a gown. This is exactly the kind of discrepancy that costs people money.
The 17 minimum is real rather than a typo, and it connects to the school rule: you can compete at your first local competition while still in high school, provided you are at least a senior, so long as you have your diploma or GED by June 30 of the competing year. How long do you have to live in Ohio to compete?
Six months for Miss Ohio, 90 days for Miss Ohio USA. Most Miss America state programs run the national 120 day standard, so Ohio's six months is genuinely longer and catches out women who move into the state for work or school.
Miss Ohio accepts four ways to satisfy it:
- Living in Ohio for six months
- Working full time in Ohio for six months
- Studying full time at an Ohio college or university with one semester completed
- Studying full time in another state while keeping permanent Ohio residence
That fourth option is the one students miss, and it matters. An Ohio woman attending college in Pennsylvania, Michigan or anywhere else still qualifies as long as her permanent residence stays in Ohio. You do not have to transfer schools to compete for your home state.
Miss Ohio USA uses the shorter Miss USA standard: 90 days of permanent, primary Ohio residence, or one full time semester, trimester or summer session as a student, or full time Ohio employment of at least 40 hours a week held for those 90 days.
Can you compete in Miss Ohio if you are married or have children?
No, not on the Miss America side. Miss Ohio requires that you have never been married and have never been pregnant, so marriage, divorce, widowhood or a past pregnancy all close that door regardless of your current situation.
Miss Ohio USA is the opposite. Miss USA repealed the rules that barred women over 28, married women and mothers, and the national casting rules now accept any marital status: unmarried, married, widowed or divorced, with children or without. What are the Miss Ohio USA requirements?
You must have been born in 2007 or earlier, be a United States citizen able to hold a valid US passport, and meet the Ohio residency test of 90 days. There is no upper age limit at all. The national casting rules also bar anyone who has already represented a state or country at Miss USA, Miss Teen USA or Miss Universe, with an exception for women who competed as teens and have since aged into the Miss division.
Unlike the Miss America side, Miss Ohio USA does not score talent, does not require a platform in the same formal sense, and does not make you win a local title first. You apply directly and the state organization reviews the application. For many women who are past 24, married, or simply do not have a stage talent, this is the only realistic route to an Ohio state title.
One practical note: at the time of writing, the Miss Ohio USA website is serving an expired security certificate, so browsers will warn you before it loads. That is a maintenance problem rather than a sign of anything worse, but it does mean current entry fees and 2027 pageant dates could not be confirmed from the source. Ask the state director directly rather than trusting a third party listing.
Where is the Miss Ohio pageant held?
Ashland, at least for now. The 2026 Miss Ohio competition ran June 17 to 20 at Ashland High School, with preliminaries on the Wednesday and Thursday and the final on Saturday. Thirty women competed for Miss Ohio and seventeen for Miss Ohio's Teen.
That was a significant change. The Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield had hosted the competition since 1977, and it is currently under restoration, so 2026 was the first year in nearly five decades that Miss Ohio was held anywhere else. Because the venue is genuinely in flux while that work continues, confirm the location for your competition year before booking hotels. The associated Miss Ohio Parade has continued to run in Mansfield.
Do you need a talent to compete in Miss Ohio?
On the Miss America side, yes. Talent is a scored phase and it absorbs a large share of preparation time. Combined with the platform requirement and the private interview, the Miss Ohio route rewards women who have been building something over months rather than weeks.
Miss Ohio USA does not score talent at all. That single difference redirects a lot of candidates. If you sing, dance, play an instrument or have a performance piece you can deliver in the time allowed, the Miss America side pays scholarship money for it. If you do not, you are not disadvantaged on the USA side.
Is there a height requirement for Miss Ohio?
No. Neither Miss Ohio nor Miss Ohio USA publishes a minimum or maximum height, and contestants are not measured as part of qualifying. The 5 foot 7 figure people repeat comes from runway modeling, where agencies do set physical specifications, not from pageant rulebooks.
