Every big pageant gates entry on four things: your age, your marital and parental status, your citizenship, and a national title you have to win first. The rules changed a lot between 2023 and 2026, and most of what ranks online still quotes the old version. Below is the current picture for each major pageant, checked against the organizations themselves, plus one route that has none of those gates.

The short answer
What are the eligibility requirements for a beauty pageant?
Most major beauty pageants require you to be a woman aged 18 or older, a citizen or resident of the country you represent, and the holder of that country's national title before you can reach the international final. Age caps run from 26 at Miss Earth to 27 at Miss World and 28 at Miss America, while Miss Universe and Miss USA removed their upper age limits entirely. None of the five biggest pageants publishes a height or weight requirement, despite the 5 foot 3 and 5 foot 4 minimums quoted all over the internet, which come from individual national franchises rather than a global rulebook. The rule that excludes the most people is marital and parental status: Miss World, Miss Earth and Miss America still require contestants to be unmarried and without children, while Miss Universe and Miss USA now accept married women, divorced women and mothers.

The four rules that decide whether you can enter
Almost every rejection at a major pageant comes down to one of these four. Read them in order, because the last one stops more people than the first three combined.
Age, and it varies more than you think
The minimum is 18 almost everywhere. The maximum is where pageants disagree: 26 at Miss Earth, 27 at Miss World, 28 at Miss America, and no cap at all at Miss Universe and Miss USA since the 2024 rule changes.
Marital status and children
Miss World, Miss Earth and Miss America require you to be unmarried and without children, including adopted and stepchildren. Miss Universe and Miss USA dropped that rule in 2023. Mrs. pageants invert it and require you to be married.
Citizenship and residency
You represent a country, so you generally need its citizenship. Miss USA also asks for verification of state residency, commonly 90 days before the state pageant, which catches people who just moved.
A national title you have to win first
This is the one nobody warns you about. You cannot apply to Miss Universe, Miss World or Miss Earth. You win your national pageant, and only that winner competes internationally. In the US the route to Miss Universe runs through Miss USA.

How do you find out if you are eligible for a pageant?
Rules move, and the pages that rank for them often lag years behind. Four steps get you a reliable answer.
Read the official rulebook, not a blog
Go to the organization's own site or its state directorship page. Miss USA state directors publish eligibility pages that spell out age by birth year rather than a number, which is the most current wording you will find.
Check the date on whatever you read
Miss Universe removed its age cap ahead of the 2024 edition and opened to married women and mothers in 2023. Anything written before that is wrong, and a lot of it still ranks.
Separate national rules from international ones
Height minimums, entry fees and extra rounds usually come from a national franchise, not the international body. A 5 foot 4 rule on one country's entry form does not exist in the global rulebook.
Ask the directorship directly
State and national directors answer eligibility questions by email, and their answer is the one that counts. If a pageant will not answer a plain eligibility question in writing, treat that as a warning sign.

To be fair about what those gates buy you: the national title route exists because it is a real competition, and a Miss Universe or Miss America sash carries prestige, scholarship money and a career platform that a free online pageant cannot match. If you are 22, unmarried and willing to compete locally for a year, that path is worth taking. This page exists for everyone the table says no to, which is most people who read it.

Miss Universe requires you to be a woman aged 18 or older who holds the national title of the country you represent.
