To become Miss Kansas you must first win one of the state's local titles, and you must be 18 to 28, a United States citizen, single, with no legal dependents, and able to prove 120 consecutive days of Kansas residency, employment or full-time enrollment. Miss Kansas USA runs on a different rulebook entirely: you apply straight to the state pageant with no local title, the residency test drops to 90 days, and the Miss division sets no upper age limit and no marital bar. Kansas also runs two more state pageants that most guides never mention.
Four doors, four different rulebooks, and the one most women assume is the only option is also the most restrictive. This guide reads all four side by side. Everything below was checked in September 2026 against each organization's own published eligibility page, and where an organization's rules contradict the common wisdom, that is noted rather than smoothed over.
How old do you have to be to compete for Miss Kansas?
For the 2027 cycle, Miss Kansas delegates must be no older than 28 as of September 30, 2027 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2027. The organization has already published the 2027 line, which is worth knowing because most state sites lag a full season behind.
Two dates, not one. That gap matters more than it looks. A woman who turns 29 in October 2027 is still eligible for the 2027 competition, because the ceiling is measured on September 30. A woman who turns 18 on September 15 is not, because the floor is measured on September 1. Read your own birthday against both dates before you pay anything.
The Miss Kansas' Teen line runs differently again: no younger than 14 as of September 1, 2027, or no older than 18 on September 30, 2027.
Do you have to win a local title to compete for Miss Kansas?
Yes, and this is the single biggest difference between the two best known Kansas pageants. The Miss Kansas organization states it plainly: to become a Miss Kansas delegate you must enter and win a local competition. Local competitions run throughout Kansas, and winning one qualifies you to advance to the state competition held each June in Pratt.
The Teen program does not work this way. Miss Kansas' Teen is a direct entry competition, so teen delegates do not have to win a local title first. That is an unusual inversion: the younger division has the easier entry path, while the adult division gates you behind a local win.
Miss Kansas USA does not gate you at all. You apply directly to the state pageant. If your calendar or your budget cannot absorb an extra local competition several months earlier, that difference alone may decide which system you enter.
Do you have to live in Kansas to compete for Miss Kansas?
You have to satisfy one of three conditions, and Kansas sets a longer clock than several neighboring states. Miss Kansas delegates qualify by residency with proof of at least 120 consecutive days in the state before the competition, or by employment with documentation of full-time in-person work of at least 40 hours per week held for at least 120 consecutive days, or by student status with full-time enrollment at an accredited college or university located in Kansas.
Miss Kansas USA uses 90 days for the equivalent tests, not 120. If you moved to Kansas recently, there is a real window in which you are eligible for one state pageant and not the other. The same 90 day figure appears in the guide to becoming Miss Nebraska, because both are produced by the same company, while Arkansas runs 120 on the Miss America side exactly as Kansas does.
Can married women and mothers compete in Miss Kansas USA?
Yes on the Miss side, and this is the rule most often reported incorrectly. The Miss Kansas USA eligibility page lists exactly two conditions for Miss delegates: you must have been born during the year 2007 or before, and you must never have participated in a previous national Miss USA pageant. That is the entire list. There is no upper age limit, no marital bar, and no motherhood bar anywhere in it.
The marital and motherhood conditions do exist on that page, but they sit under the Miss Kansas Teen USA heading, where delegates must be born during 2007 to 2011, must never have been married or had a marriage annulled, and must never have given birth, be pregnant, or be a parent. Read quickly and it is easy to carry those Teen restrictions up to the Miss division where they do not belong.
Kansas is the fifth state where we have now confirmed this exact layout, after Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Nebraska. It is the same producer's template each time, so if you are comparing states across that group, expect the same reading trap in each.
Miss Kansas, on the Miss America side, goes the other way. Its eligibility list requires delegates to be single with no legal dependents. The 90 day interstate lockout in the Kansas contract
Buried in the Miss Kansas USA eligibility text is a clause worth reading before you enter. A delegate agrees to maintain residency through the state pageant and, if she wins, through the national Miss USA pageant. If she does not win and then establishes permanent residency in another state, she may not compete in another state's Miss USA preliminary for at least 90 consecutive days after the date of her state pageant.
In practice that means losing in Kansas and moving to Missouri does not let you enter there immediately. The clock runs from your Kansas pageant date. We have now found the same wording in every state from this producer that we have checked, so treat it as standard rather than a Kansas quirk.
Kansas has four routes, not two
Most guides stop at Miss Kansas and Miss Kansas USA. Two more state pageants take Kansas women every year.
Miss Kansas Volunteer is the state preliminary to Miss Volunteer America, and its age rule is the most flexible in the state. A contestant must be at least 17 on the first day of the state pageant, and she can qualify as no older than 26 by any one of three separate tests: on December 31 in the year of the national pageant, or on the first day of the state pageant, or on the date she wins a local title or is appointed to an at-large title. Three chances to fit under the same ceiling is unusual, and a woman who ages out under one test may still qualify under another. She must also have completed her high school education. The 2026 pageant is set for Leavenworth in the fall, and scoring is split evenly at 25 percent each for personal interview, evening gown, fitness and wellness, and talent, with an on-stage question for the top five.
Miss Czech-Slovak Kansas is the heritage route, held in Wilson, and it is a qualifier for a national final that most Kansans do not know exists. Kansas is one of only ten states with a Czech-Slovak qualifier at all, which makes it a genuine local advantage. The rules are narrow: contestants are 16 to 26, single and unwed, and must be of Czech, Moravian, Slovak, Rusyn or Silesian descent and able to prove it. A hand made ethnic costume, the kroj, is mandatory and judged, and a real one costs hundreds to thousands of dollars. The national final runs in Wilber, Nebraska in early August. What are the phases of the Miss Kansas competition?
Miss Kansas is composed of a personal interview with the judges, evening gown, on-stage conversation, talent, and health and fitness. The organization writes the talent phase as Talent/HERStory, which signals that a delegate may present a personal narrative rather than a conventional performance piece. If you have been avoiding the Miss America system because you do not sing or dance, that phrasing is worth a direct question to the organization before you rule it out.
Miss Kansas Volunteer publishes exact weights, which Miss Kansas does not: 25 percent each across four phases. If you want to know precisely where to spend your preparation, the Volunteer system tells you and the others leave you to infer it.
What does it cost, and what changed for 2026?
Costs vary by local and by system, so treat any single figure you read online with suspicion. One concrete change is published, though. Miss Kansas Volunteer states that beginning with the 2026 pageant season it will no longer be offering local crowns, and that crowns can be purchased at an additional cost. That is a real shift in what a local title includes, and it moves an expense from the organization to the contestant.
On the scholarship side, the Miss Kansas page carries a note that student loans will not be paid to any 2026 to 2027 delegate. If you were counting on scholarship money reaching a loan servicer, confirm how any award will actually be disbursed before you build a budget around it.
Who is Miss Kansas 2026?
Sophie Lewis of Kansas City was crowned Miss Kansas on June 6, 2026 at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena at Pratt Community College, and she represented Kansas at Miss America 2027, held September 6, 2026 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Ta'Liyah Lewis of Wichita took the Miss Kansas' Teen title the same night. On the Miss USA side, the Kansas state pageant ran June 6 and 7, 2026 at the Wichita Center for Performing Arts.

What if you are 29 or older, married, or out of season?
Then three of the four Kansas routes are closed to you and the fourth may be. Miss Kansas caps at 28 and requires single status. Miss Czech-Slovak Kansas caps at 26 and requires unwed status plus provable ancestry. Miss Kansas Volunteer caps at 26. Only Miss Kansas USA has no ceiling, and it still requires that you were born in 2007 or earlier and have never competed at a national Miss USA pageant.
