Miss Virginia Requirements: Age Limit, Miss Virginia USA Rules, and How to Become Miss Virginia

To become Miss Virginia you must win one of the local titles held around the state between October and April, then compete at the state final in Roanoke. Virginia is one of three states in this series where the published age cap contradicts the national one, alongside Alabama, which publishes 27, and Louisiana, which still publishes 17 to 25: missvirginia.org tells candidates they must be "no older than 27 at state," while the Miss America Organization publishes the band as no older than 28 as of September 30. Virginia also measures your age against its own state competition date rather than a fixed September calendar date. If you are 27 or 28, resolve that with the state office in writing before you pay a local entry fee.

That contradiction is the single most useful thing to know about competing in Virginia, and it is the reason this guide leads with it. Everything else, the local circuit, the residency test, the fees, follows the pattern you would expect from a well run state program. The age line does not. Last updated August 2026.

What are the Miss Virginia requirements?

Virginia publishes its own contestant page, which puts it ahead of several states that publish nothing at all. On that page the state lists the conditions you must satisfy to compete in the Miss division:

• Female, and a citizen of the United States
• "Single"
• "No legal dependents"
• In reasonably good health
• Within the age band (see the next section, which is where Virginia gets complicated)
• Able to "meet residency requirements for your specific city or state"
• Holder of a local title, won at one of the competitions held across Virginia

Two of those deserve a second read. "Single" and "No legal dependents" are the traditional Miss America conditions, and they are still in force on the Miss America side in Virginia. They are not in force on the Miss Virginia USA side, which is a completely separate organization with completely different rules, and confusing the two is the most common mistake first time entrants make. The second is the residency line, which pushes the actual test down to the local competition rather than setting a statewide clock. More on that below.

The Teen division runs 14 to 18. Everything in this guide that concerns the Miss division applies to the state's Miss America affiliate, not to the Miss Virginia USA program.

What is the Miss Virginia age limit?

There are two published answers and they do not match, so here are both, attributed.

What the state publishes: missvirginia.org heads its age line "Miss America 18-28" and then defines it in the text as "must be 18 by state competition, and no older than 27 at state." Read literally, the heading says 28 and the definition says 27.

What the national organization publishes: the Miss America Organization announced the current band in July 2025 in precise terms. Delegates "must be no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2026 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2026." Teen runs 14 as of September 1 to 18 as of September 30.

So there are two separate differences, not one. The first is the number: 27 in Virginia's definition against 28 nationally. The second is quieter and matters just as much. The national rule fixes your age against two calendar dates in September that never move. Virginia measures it against its own state competition date, which lands in June and shifts year to year. A woman who is 27 in June and turns 28 in August is inside the national band on September 30 and outside Virginia's definition at state. Those are genuinely different populations of women.

Do not try to reason your way to which one wins. Email the Miss Virginia state office, state your date of birth and the cycle you intend to compete in, and get the answer in writing before you spend anything. A local entry fee is not large, but the time and preparation behind a local competition are, and an eligibility problem discovered in June is a wasted year. If you are 26 or younger you can skip this section entirely; it only bites at the top of the band.

Do you have to win a local title to compete in Miss Virginia?

Yes. Virginia requires a local title in the Miss division. You cannot enter the state competition directly, and Virginia does not run the at large route that some states use to fill out their state field. That makes the local circuit the actual entry point, and it makes the calendar below the most practical page in this guide.

This puts Virginia in the same group as Texas and North Carolina, and in the opposite group from states that hold an at large weekend. It is a real constraint rather than a formality: if you miss the local season, you wait a full year.

When and where are the Miss Virginia local pageants?

Virginia publishes its local circuit with dates, venues and director contact numbers, which is more transparency than most states offer. Thirteen dated local competitions run from October 2026 through April 2027 for the cycle that ends at the state final in June.

Read that table geographically and a strategy falls out of it. The Hampton Roads cluster (Virginia Beach in December and again in March, Courtland in December, Southampton in January, Franklin in March) is dense enough that a candidate in Norfolk or Chesapeake has several realistic attempts in one season. The Northern Virginia corridor has effectively one date, November 9 in Springfield, so a candidate in Arlington or Fairfax has far less margin for error and should plan around that single evening or be willing to travel south.

The published director phone numbers are worth using. Local directors know how many candidates typically enter their title, what the local judging panel tends to reward, and whether a title is contested or has gone unfilled in recent years. That is information no directory site has.

Do you have to live in Virginia to compete for Miss Virginia?

On the Miss America side, effectively yes, but the test is set at the local level. The state's own wording is that you must "meet residency requirements for your specific city or state," which delegates the question to the local competition you enter rather than imposing a single statewide clock. Local titles in Virginia are generally tied to a city or region, so in practice you need a genuine connection to the area whose title you are competing for. Ask the local director what they accept: residence, full time study at a school in the area, and full time employment in the area are the three tests state programs most often use.

How do you enter the Miss Virginia pageant?

The sequence is short and the timing is the hard part.

1. Confirm your eligibility, and if you are 27 or 28 resolve the age question with the state office in writing first.
2. Pick a local competition from the circuit above. Choose on geography and on the number of candidates who typically enter, not on the prettiest name.
3. Contact the local director. Ask about the entry fee, the paperwork deadline, the required paperwork, and whether they run a candidate orientation.
4. Prepare your talent, interview and onstage question. The interview carries real weight and it is the part first time candidates most reliably underprepare.
5. Compete at the local. If you win, you go to the state final in Roanoke in June.

What are the Miss Virginia USA requirements?

Here we have to be honest about a research problem, because it affects how much you should trust anything you read about Miss Virginia USA, including this page.

Both Miss Virginia USA web domains are unreachable. One refuses connections outright and the other returns an HTTP 403 error to every request, including from an ordinary browser. So there is no current, first party Virginia rulebook to quote, and this guide quotes none. Virginia is not unusual in this. Several state level Miss USA websites in this series are dead, expired or behind a password wall.

What does apply is the national Miss USA casting rulebook, which is live and which governs the open casting route:

• Born in 2007 or earlier
• No upper age limit
• Any marital status: married, divorced, single
• With or without children
• United States citizen, recognized as female

That is a far wider door than the Miss America side, and it is the practical answer for most women over 24 who read this page and conclude Miss Virginia is closed to them. The old rulebook that third party directories still repeat, 18 to 27, never married, no children, six months residency, was replaced years ago. If a directory quotes you those numbers for Miss Virginia USA, it is copying a document that no longer governs anything.

Do you have to live in Virginia to compete for Miss Virginia USA?

For the open casting route, no. The national casting rules state it plainly: "You are not required to be a resident now or previous to this casting opportunity in any of the states for which you may be considered." That single sentence is the most under-known fact in American pageantry, and it is why titleholders occasionally represent states they have never lived in.

It also means a woman in Virginia is not limited to Virginia. If the Virginia program is dormant in a given year, and the unreachable websites suggest it may be, the casting route is still open to her through the national organization.

Miss Virginia vs Miss Virginia USA

These are two unrelated organizations that happen to use similar names. This is the comparison that resolves most of the confusion on this topic.

If you are married, or a mother, or over 28, the Miss America column is closed to you and the Miss USA column is not. That is the whole decision for a large share of the women who search this topic. Has Virginia ever won Miss America or Miss USA?

Virginia is now live on both sides. It has been strong and recent on the Miss America side for years, and on August 27, 2026 it ended a 56 year Miss USA drought.

Miss America: four wins, two of them since 2010. Kylene Barker (1979), Nicole Johnson (1999), Caressa Cameron (2010) and Camille Schrier (2020), plus first runner up finishes in 1987, 1995 and 2015. Very few states can show two national titles inside the last two decades.

Schrier's win deserves a paragraph of its own, because it is the most useful piece of evidence on this page for anyone worried about the talent phase. She competed as a Doctor of Pharmacy student at Virginia Commonwealth University, walked onto the Miss America stage in a lab coat and safety goggles, and performed the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, the reaction commonly demonstrated as "elephant's toothpaste." She won. Not placed, won. Miss USA: three wins, two of them back to back, and the third 56 years later. Wendy Dascomb won in 1969, Deborah Shelton in 1970, and Justus Kelley of Arlington on August 27, 2026 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, as the first married woman, the first mother and the first woman in her thirties to take the title. That consecutive pair puts Virginia in a group of only four states and territories ever to win Miss USA in successive years, alongside Illinois, Texas and the District of Columbia. Between 1970 and 2026 Virginia recorded 26 placements at Miss USA and no titles, then broke the drought outright. Where is the Miss Virginia pageant held?

The Miss Virginia state final is held at the Berglund Center Auditorium in Roanoke, in June. Maddie Marchant of Lebanon, Virginia was crowned Miss Virginia on June 27, 2026 and represented Virginia at Miss America 2027 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Caedyn Riddle of Rocky Mount was crowned Miss Virginia's Teen the same weekend.

On the Miss USA side, Justus Kelley of Arlington was crowned Miss Virginia USA 2026 on July 18, 2026 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner in McLean. Kelley holds a bachelor's degree in community health and a master's in public health administration from Indiana University, works as a senior philanthropic adviser at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and founded Foster Footprints, which builds support networks for foster youth and their families. Madyson Blizzard of Purcellville was named Miss Virginia Teen USA 2026. Because the state organization's own websites are unreachable, those titleholder details come from press coverage rather than from the state program.

How much does it cost to compete for Miss Virginia?

Virginia does not publish a single statewide entry fee, because the fee is set by the local competition you enter. Miss America Organization candidate membership runs in the region of fifty dollars a year, and local entry fees are typically modest by comparison. The real cost sits elsewhere: competition wardrobe, an evening gown, talent preparation or coaching, travel to the local and then to Roanoke, and hair and makeup on competition days.

One warning that applies everywhere and is worth repeating here. A legitimate state affiliate does not cold contact you to say you have been "selected" and then ask for a large upfront payment. Can you compete in Miss Virginia if you are married or have children?

You can compete in Miss Virginia USA. The national casting rules explicitly admit women of any marital status, with or without children, and set no upper age limit at all. Beyond those two, the Mrs. systems are built specifically for married women and run their own state and national finals. So the honest answer is that marriage and motherhood close one door in Virginia and leave at least two others open.

Is there a height requirement for Miss Virginia?
