To become Miss Alabama you must win one of the state's 43 published local preliminaries first, and 16 of those are closed to everyone except students at one named college each. Alabama also publishes an age cap of 27 on the first day of the state competition, while the national Miss America rule says 28 as of September 30. If you are 27 or 28, that one line decides whether you have a route at all, and you should not take the website's word for it without written confirmation.

Where an organization publishes nothing on a point, this guide says so rather than guessing.
What is the age limit for Miss Alabama?
Miss Alabama publishes that a Miss contestant "must be 18 years of age by the first day of the State Competition and no more than 27 years of age on the first day of the State Competition". The national Miss America rule, published by the national organization, is that you "must be no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2026 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2026". Those are two different numbers measured on two different dates, and Alabama's is the tighter one.
The practical effect falls entirely on 27 and 28 year olds. A woman who turns 28 in the spring is inside the national rule and outside the Alabama one as published. There is a plausible innocent explanation: the Alabama eligibility page carries a copyright line ending in 2021 and describes itself as the 2025 to 2026 cycle, while the preliminary schedule sitting next to it covers 2026 to 2027. The page may simply be a cycle behind rather than deliberately stricter. That is a guess, though, and it is not one you should stake an entry fee on.
Do this instead: email the Miss Alabama state office, quote the sentence back to them, and ask which cap governs your competition year. Get the answer in writing. Alabama is not alone here. The Teen band is wider than most states run: "must be 14 years of age by the first day of the State Competition and no more than 18 years of age on the first day of the State Competition". Many states stop their teen division at 17.
What are the requirements to be Miss Alabama?
Alabama publishes a short list. You must be a United States citizen, be a female, meet residency requirements for competing in Alabama, meet the age band above, and win a local preliminary title. There is no height requirement, no weight requirement and no published measurement standard, which is true across the Miss America system rather than being an Alabama concession.
The requirement people underestimate is the local title. Alabama does not run an at-large or wildcard route into the state competition. If you do not win a local, you are not on that stage, which makes your real deadline the nearest preliminary date rather than the June state final.
Do you have to live in Alabama to compete for Miss Alabama?
You have to meet the residency test, not be born in the state. Alabama's published wording is only "Meet residency requirements for competing in Alabama" with no duration attached, so the national Miss America standard is what applies: 120 consecutive days living in the state, or full-time in-person employment there, or full-time enrollment at an accredited school or college in the state.
The clearest proof that birth does not govern is the current titleholder. Ruby Tilghman, Miss Alabama 2026, is originally from Panama City, Florida. She graduated from the University of Alabama and is headed to UAB for medical school, and she competed and won as Miss Birmingham. Enrollment at an Alabama university satisfies the residency test on its own, which is why the college route matters so much in this state.
The Miss USA side is looser again. The national casting rules state, word for word, that "You are not required to be a resident now or previous to this casting opportunity in any of the states for which you may be considered."
How much does it cost to enter Miss Alabama?
Alabama publishes both numbers, which many states do not. Membership is "$49.99/per year for both Teens and Misses". Then, in the organization's own capitals, "FOR EACH PRELIMINARY YOU ENTER, YOU WILL ALSO OPEN A SPOT FUND ACCOUNT AND RAISE $30".
Read that second line carefully, because the $30 is per preliminary rather than per year. One local costs roughly $80 in fees. Three locals costs roughly $140. Since a local title is the only way onto the state stage, entering more than one is the normal strategy rather than an extravagance, so budget for the multiple. That $30 per preliminary is money you raise rather than money you have, and most entrants get it from local businesses, which is easier when you work through the list in organized batches instead of sending one hopeful email at a time. How many local pageants are there in Alabama?
Forty-three are published for the 2026 to 2027 cycle, which is the largest local circuit in this series so far. They split into two very different groups, and the split is the single most useful thing on the Alabama schedule.
Twenty-seven are open. These include Miss Shelby County, Miss Hoover, Miss Jefferson County, Miss Leeds Area, Miss Trussville, Miss Tennessee Valley, Miss Iron City, Miss Lake Guntersville, Miss Vestavia Hills, Miss Ruffner Mountain, Miss Irondale, Miss Oak Mountain, Miss Hamilton, Miss Historic Springville, Miss St. Clair County, Miss Tuscaloosa, Miss Hidden River, Miss Covered Bridge, Miss Birmingham, Miss Cahaba Valley, Miss Eastern Shore, Miss Mobile Bay, Miss West Alabama, Miss Central Alabama, Miss East Alabama and Miss River City. Dates run from June 2026 through to titles still marked TBA.
Sixteen are closed to students at one specific institution each: Miss Auburn University, Miss University of Alabama, Miss UAB, Miss Samford University, Miss Troy University, Miss University of South Alabama, Miss University of North Alabama, Miss Jacksonville State University, Miss Wallace State Community College, Miss Calhoun Community College, Miss Coastal Alabama Community College, Miss Southern Union Community College, Miss Northwest Shoals Community College, plus Miss Phenix City, Miss Sylacauga and Miss Autauga County Fair.
If you are enrolled at one of those campuses you effectively have a second, smaller field to compete in alongside the open ones. If you are not, roughly 37 percent of the published schedule is not available to you, and the real number of shots you have is 27 rather than 43. Nobody tells prospective entrants this, and it changes how you plan a season.
One more line on that page is worth quoting as a scam filter: the organization states that "ONLY those pageants listed on this page are official preliminaries". What is the difference between Miss Alabama and Miss Alabama USA?
They are separate organizations leading to separate national finals, and a woman shut out of one is often wide open on the other.

There is a third route people miss entirely. Miss Alabama Volunteer feeds Miss Volunteer America in Jackson, Tennessee, and caps entrants at 26. That 26 is the Volunteer organization's national standard rather than an Alabama rule, so do not read it as a local quirk. One structural detail about the Miss USA side is worth knowing before you plan travel, and it is not really an Alabama fact at all. Since 2025, A Blaize Productions of Atlanta, Georgia has held the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA state licenses for Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina, and it stages several of them together. That is why Samantha Havenstrite was crowned Miss Alabama USA 2026 on July 11, 2026 at Mississippi State University in Starkville rather than anywhere in Alabama, and why her predecessor Kennedy Whisenant was crowned in Cleveland, Mississippi. Four Southern states now answer to one production company, so competition weekend happens wherever that company books a venue. Whisenant went on to place in the top 10 at Miss USA 2025, so the route works; it just is not a local one.
How is Miss Alabama scored?
Alabama does not publish scoring weights, and this guide will not invent them. Some states in this series do publish a split, and where they do it runs 30 percent private interview, 20 percent talent, 20 percent evening gown, 20 percent fitness and 10 percent on-stage conversation. That is the Miss America organization's standard rather than a state-by-state figure, so it is a reasonable working assumption for Alabama, but it is an assumption. Ask the state office whether it will share the weighting for your cycle.
What you can rely on is the shape. Two of the five phases are you speaking, and on every published Miss America scorecard the two talking phases together outweigh talent. Has Alabama ever won Miss America?
Four times, which is the strongest Miss America record of any state covered in this series. Yolande Betbeze won in 1951, Heather Whitestone in 1995, Deidre Downs in 2005 and Abbie Stockard of Vestavia Hills in 2025. Whitestone was the first deaf woman to win the national title. Alabama also placed in consecutive years recently, with Emma Terry finishing fourth runner-up at Miss America 2026. Four Alabama women have finished first runner-up: Teresa Cheatham in 1979, Paige Phillips in 1981, Scarlotte Deupree in 2003 and Lauren Bradford in 2022.
On the Miss USA side Alabama has one win, and it was a big one. Sylvia Hitchcock won Miss USA in 1967 and then won Miss Universe the same year. The state holds 32 placements at Miss USA overall.
Can you compete in a beauty pageant in Alabama without winning a local title?
On the Miss America side, no. Alabama publishes no at-large route, so the local title is compulsory. On the Miss USA side, yes, because entry is direct.
