To become Miss Tennessee you first have to decide which Miss Tennessee you mean. Tennessee is the only state in this series with two rival organizations using nearly the same title, and they send their winners to different national finals. The Miss America affiliate crowns its Miss Tennessee at Belmont University in Nashville each June, and that winner advances to Miss America. Miss Tennessee Volunteer, built after the state broke from the Miss America Organization in 2019, crowns its winner at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson each July, and that winner advances to Miss Volunteer America. Both are legitimate. A woman may compete in both. The name alone will not tell you which one you are entering.
That is the single most important thing to understand before you spend a dollar in this state, and it is the reason so much online advice about "Miss Tennessee" is quietly wrong. A rulebook, an age band, a competition date or a coaching recommendation that is accurate for one organization can be completely inapplicable to the other. Why are there two Miss Tennessee pageants?
In May 2019 the Tennessee state pageant cut ties with the Miss America Organization. It was one of four state programs that acted against the national body during the restructuring that followed the Gretchen Carlson era, a period when several states publicly broke with national leadership over the direction of the organization. Allison DeMarcus then built the Miss Tennessee Volunteer Pageant in its place, and rather than sending its winner to Miss America, it feeds a separate national final called Miss Volunteer America. The Miss America Organization responded by re-establishing its own Miss Tennessee.
Seven years later both run every year, both crown a woman called some version of Miss Tennessee, and neither is a scam or a knockoff. They are two competing systems with real stages, real scholarships and real national finals behind them. What they do not share is a destination. Win the Volunteer title and you do not go to Miss America. Win the Miss America affiliated title and you do not go to Miss Volunteer America.
The practical effect is that Tennessee entrants have to do one piece of homework nobody in Ohio or Texas has to do: establish which organization is running any competition you are looking at, before you enter it. Local titles feed upward into one system or the other, so even a small local competition sits on one side of the split.
What are the Miss Tennessee requirements?
These are the rules published by the Miss America affiliate at misstennessee.org, the organization whose winner advances to Miss America. Tennessee currently publishes cycle 28, covering competitions held after June 2026, and it states the age band as no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2027 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2027. The Teen division runs no younger than 14 as of September 1, 2027 and no older than 18 as of September 30, 2027.
Read those years carefully. They are 2027 dates, not 2026 ones, because Tennessee has already rolled forward to its next cycle. This trips people up constantly when they compare states, because a state still publishing 2026 dates looks like it has a different rule when it actually has the same rule read one cycle earlier. Always check which cycle year a state page is publishing before you conclude two states disagree.
Residency is where Tennessee is genuinely generous. The state accepts three alternative tests, and you only need to satisfy one:
- Reside in Tennessee, or
- Attend an accredited Tennessee college or university full time, or
- Work full time in the state.
That third option does more work than it looks like it does. A woman who lives just across the line in northern Mississippi, southern Kentucky or western North Carolina but holds a full time job in Memphis, Clarksville or Chattanooga satisfies the Tennessee residency requirement through employment alone, without moving house. Only Michigan and the New Jersey Miss USA program publish a comparably wide set of alternatives. Most states are far narrower, and some tie residency to the local competition area rather than the state.
Beyond age and residency, Tennessee requires that you be a United States citizen and female, and that you meet the character criteria set by the Miss America Organization. The Miss America side retains the traditional single status and no dependents conditions nationally, so marriage and motherhood remain disqualifying on that route.
Do you need a local title to compete in Miss Tennessee?
No. Tennessee runs an at-large application route alongside its local titles, so you can apply directly rather than winning a local competition first. That is a meaningful advantage and it puts Tennessee among the more open states in the country. In Virginia, Texas and North Carolina the local circuit is the only door, which means missing your local season costs you an entire year.
One caution: at-large windows are typically shorter and earlier than candidates expect, and they are not always advertised as prominently as the local competitions. Confirm the current cycle deadline with the organization directly rather than relying on a third-party calendar.
Miss Tennessee Volunteer: the other crown
Miss Tennessee Volunteer competes at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson. The 2026 competition ran July 22 to 25, with the Teen competition on July 18. Karrena Rainey, 24, previously Miss Madison County and a forensic technician with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in Jackson, was crowned Miss Tennessee Volunteer 2027 there on July 26, 2026. The previous titleholder, Meghan Poore of Medina, was chosen from a field of 35 candidates.
Eligibility on the Volunteer side is tighter than on the Miss America side, which matters if you are weighing the two. Miss Volunteer America publishes the rule as contestants who "must be at least 17 years of age and must not be older than 26 years of age as of the day she competes, is crowned or appointed as the Local or State Titleholder". That is a rolling test tied to your crowning date rather than to a fixed calendar date, and it is unusual. State organizations in the system add that you must be a United States citizen, medically and legally female, never married and not a parent, and that residency is satisfied as a bonafide resident, a full-time employee or a student. The practical consequence is easy to miss: a 27 year old who is still comfortably inside the Miss America band at 28 is already too old for the Volunteer system.
The winner serves as the Governor's Character Education Spokesperson, traveling the state speaking to young people, which is a genuinely substantial platform role and a real point of difference from the Miss America side.
The scoring is where this system diverges most sharply, and it deserves more attention than it usually gets. Miss Tennessee Volunteer judges four categories with equal weight: fitness and wellness, talent, evening gown, and a private interview. Equal weighting is unusual. Most pageant systems, including the Miss America side, weight the private interview most heavily, often at 30 to 35 percent of the total. Equal weighting changes who the system suits:
- If your interview is your strongest phase, equal weighting works against you, because your best category is capped at a quarter of the score. The Miss America affiliated route rewards that strength more.
- If your talent is strong, equal weighting works in your favor, because talent carries a full quarter rather than being one component among several weighted below the interview.
- If you are an all-rounder with no weak phase, equal weighting suits you well, since there is no single category you can afford to be weak in but also none that can sink you alone.
This is worth thinking about honestly rather than choosing an organization on prestige. Miss Tennessee USA: no published rules, and an appointed titleholder
The Miss Tennessee USA route works differently again, and researching it is harder than it should be. The state website is live, but when checked in August 2026 it carried only a hall of fame of past titleholders and no eligibility page whatsoever. Nothing about age, residency, marital status or fees. That makes the national Miss USA casting rules the reliable source rather than the state site, and it is worth saying plainly that a great many third-party pageant directories still repeat the pre-2023 Miss USA rulebook (18 to 27, never married, no children, six months residency), which is simply out of date.
The current national casting rules state that candidates must have been born during or before 2007, with no upper age limit, and that any marital status is acceptable including married, widowed and divorced, with or without children. On residency the rules are explicit: "You are not required to be a resident now or previous to this casting opportunity in any of the states for which you may be considered."
That is not a technicality. Sydney Grace Young of Clarksville was appointed Miss Tennessee USA 2026 on June 30, 2026, following an open casting call run by the national organization, rather than winning a state pageant. Tennessee is not alone in this. Michigan's 2026 Miss USA titleholder lives in Tampa, Florida, and Washington's was appointed in July 2026 and is based in Hawaii. Three states in a row is a pattern, not a coincidence, and it reflects exactly what the casting rules permit.
For an entrant, the practical read is this: if you are over the Miss Tennessee age band, married, a mother, or simply cannot satisfy a residency test, the Miss USA side may well still be open to you. The state pageant was historically held at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, where it has run since 1999, but national casting is now the route that matters most.

Has Tennessee ever won Miss America or Miss USA?
Both, twice each, which makes Tennessee one of the genuinely strong states on both sides of American pageantry. That balance is rarer than it sounds. Virginia went 56 years between Miss USA titles before winning again in August 2026. New Jersey has never won Miss USA at all in 74 years. On the Miss America side, Barbara Jo Walker won in 1947, competing as Miss Memphis rather than under a state title, and Kellye Cash won in 1987. Tennessee also holds a first runner-up finish in 1983 and three second runner-up finishes.
On the Miss USA side, Lynnette "Lynn" Cole won in 2000 and Rachel Smith won in 2007. The more telling number is the depth: Tennessee holds 37 placements at Miss USA, the fourth highest of any state, behind only Texas, California and South Carolina. Two wins is good. 1. Decide which national final you actually want
This is step one in Tennessee and nowhere else in the country. Miss America, Miss Volunteer America and Miss USA are three different destinations with three different competition styles, calendars and costs. Nothing stops you competing in more than one system, and many women do, but they demand different preparation, so pick your primary before you start spending.
2. Check your age against the right cycle year
Tennessee publishes cycle 28, so the dates you need are September 1, 2027 and September 30, 2027, not 2026. Work out your own age on both dates. If you are close to either boundary, ask the organization in writing rather than assuming, because the cycle rolls forward and a rule that excluded you last year may not this year.
3. Apply at large or choose a local competition
