Where a fact comes from a state page rather than a national one, it says so, because on this particular state those two sources do not agree.
What is the age limit for Miss Louisiana?
The Miss Louisiana Scholarship Organization publishes, word for word, that to become a candidate you must "Be between the ages of 17 and 25." The national Miss America rule for the current cycle says a contestant must be no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2026 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2026. Those two statements cannot both be operative, and the gap is not small.
It is worth being precise about why this matters. 17 to 25 was the national Miss America band before the organization widened it. Several third party pageant directories still republish the old band as though it were current, which is normally how a reader ends up misinformed. Louisiana is a different case, because the page carrying the 17 to 25 line sits under a footer reading "© 2026 Miss Louisiana Scholarship Organization, Inc. All Rights Reserved." It is not an obviously abandoned page from a prior cycle.
The practical reading: if you are 26, 27 or 28, do not assume the state page closes the door, and do not assume it does not. Email the state office at the Monroe address published on the site and ask for a written answer tied to the specific competition year you intend to enter. If you are 17, ask the same question in reverse. A local director can also confirm quickly, because it is the locals that actually take your entry.
What are the requirements to compete for Miss Louisiana?
The state organization lists six conditions to become a candidate. Quoted directly, you must "Be between the ages of 17 and 25," "Be a United States citizen," "Meet residency requirements for competing in Louisiana," "Meet character criteria as set forth by the Miss America Organization," "Be in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements," and "Be able to meet the time commitment and job responsibilities as set forth by the local, state and national competition(s) in which you compete." A seventh line points you to the Miss America State and Local Application and Agreement for anything else.
Two things are absent from that list and both catch people out. There is no height requirement and no weight requirement, which is normal across Miss America state organizations and worth saying plainly because the question comes up constantly. And there is no line about marital status or children on the state page, even though the national Miss America rules do carry one. Do you have to live in Louisiana to compete for Miss Louisiana?
Yes, but the state page does not attach a number to it. It says only that you must "Meet residency requirements for competing in Louisiana," which means the national Miss America residency standard applies: 120 consecutive days of residence, full time enrollment at an accredited Louisiana school or college, or full time employment in the state, each measured immediately before the competition. If you moved to Baton Rouge in June for a job that starts in August, count the days carefully rather than estimating.
Enrollment is the route most often overlooked. Five of Louisiana's local titles are attached to universities, so a student at Northwestern State, Louisiana Monroe, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana Christian or Louisiana Tech may have a preliminary sitting on her own campus that a non student in the same city cannot enter at all.
How much does it cost to enter Miss Louisiana?
Louisiana publishes its cost structure clearly, which not every state does. There is a "$35 registration fee to the Miss America Organization," paid once, and then "$75 per local you enter." Registration also carries a listed benefit of a "Chance to win a $1,000 scholarship, one in each state + D.C."
The important word in that structure is "per." One preliminary costs about $110 all in. Three preliminaries in one season cost about $260, because the $75 repeats every time and the $35 does not. Alabama publishes the same shape with different numbers, a flat membership plus a charge attached to each preliminary you enter, so it is worth expecting when you compare states.
None of that includes what you actually spend. Competition wardrobe, talent coaching, travel to a preliminary several parishes away and the week in Monroe for the state final are the real budget, and they are not published anywhere because they vary enormously. How many local pageants are there in Louisiana?
The state organization publishes roughly 27 local preliminaries across the 2026 to 2027 season, running from Miss Louisiana Watermelon Festival in late July through the university titles in January 2027. Named preliminaries include Miss Slidell, Miss Camellia City, Miss Louisiana Port City, Miss Spirit of the Red, Miss City of Lights, Miss Cane River, Miss Natchitoches Parish, Miss CENLA, Miss Monroe, Miss Pride of Monroe, Miss Avoyelles Arts and Music Festival, Miss Northwestern Lady of the Bracelet, Miss University of Louisiana Monroe, Miss Heart of Pilot, Miss Twin Cities, Miss Ouachita Parish, Miss Belle of the Bayou, Miss Minden, Miss Spirit of Fasching, Miss Ruston, Miss Lincoln Parish, Miss Southeastern Louisiana University, Miss Louisiana Christian University and Miss Louisiana Tech University, plus several Stockshow titles and Miss Richland Parish in January.
Read that list geographically and something jumps out. Monroe, Ruston, Minden, Natchitoches, Alexandria and Shreveport carry most of the circuit. The state organization itself is headquartered in Monroe and the state final is held there. The circuit is concentrated in north Louisiana, not around New Orleans, which is the opposite of where most people assume Louisiana pageantry lives.
Are there beauty pageants in New Orleans, Louisiana?
Fewer Miss America preliminaries than you would expect. The published circuit has titles in Slidell and Camellia City on the north shore and around the metro area, but the density of local titles sits several hours north, in the Monroe and Shreveport corridors. A woman in New Orleans who wants a Miss America route should plan on driving, or should look harder at the Miss Louisiana USA side, which does not require a local title at all.
That is not the same as saying New Orleans has no pageantry. Krewe and festival royalty, Mardi Gras courts and independent local titles are dense in the city and always have been. They are simply a separate system from the one that leads to Miss America, and winning one does not put you in the Monroe field in June.
What is the difference between Miss Louisiana and Miss Louisiana USA?
They are unrelated organizations that lead to different national titles, and in Louisiana the two run on genuinely different rules.
Miss Louisiana feeds Miss America. It requires a local preliminary win, publishes the 17 to 25 band discussed above, includes a talent phase, and awards scholarship money.
Miss Louisiana USA feeds Miss USA. Since 2025 it has been produced by A Blaize Productions of Atlanta, led by Ariana Blaize, Miss Universe Guyana 2024, which also holds the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA state licenses for Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina. You apply directly. The national Miss USA casting rules state plainly that "You are not required to be a resident now or previous to this casting opportunity in any of the states for which you may be considered," that entrants must be born during or before 2007, that any marital status is accepted, and that women with or without children may compete. There is no upper age limit. The phases are fitness, evening gown and interview, with no talent round.
There is a third system as well. Miss Louisiana Volunteer America feeds Miss Volunteer America and publishes an age range of 17 to 26 plus a high school completion requirement. The 26 is the national Miss Volunteer America standard rather than anything Louisiana set, and Maryland and Alabama publish the same number.

Can you compete in a Louisiana pageant if you are married or have children?
It depends entirely on which of the three organizations you enter, and the honest answer changed at the national level on August 27, 2026.
Miss America still carries a marital status condition in its national rules. Miss Louisiana's own eligibility page does not restate it, so read the Miss America State and Local Application and Agreement rather than the state summary, and ask your local director directly.
Miss USA does not carry one, and this year that stopped being theoretical. Justus Kelley, 31, competing as Miss Virginia USA, was crowned Miss USA 2026 on August 27, 2026 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. She is married to Tyler Kelley, the two are licensed foster parents, and she became the first married woman, the first mother and the first woman in her thirties to win the title in the competition's 75 year history. Miss USA opened eligibility to married women and mothers in 2023 and removed its upper age limit afterward. Three years later a married mother won it.
The practical consequence for a Louisiana entrant is simple. If marriage, motherhood or an age past 25 closes the Miss Louisiana door, the Miss Louisiana USA door is very likely still open, and it now has a national winner who proves the route is real rather than nominal.
How is Miss Louisiana judged?
The state organization publishes five phases of competition: Private Interview with Panel of Judges, Talent, On-Stage Interview, Red Carpet (Evening Wear), and Social Impact Pitch. It does not publish percentage weights for any of them.
That absence is worth flagging, because some states do publish weights and you may have seen a 30/20/20/20/10 split quoted as though it were universal. Wisconsin and Maryland both publish that split. Louisiana, Alabama and Indiana publish neither weights nor any alternative, so do not prepare on the assumption that interview carries 30 percent in Monroe. Ask your local director what the state uses in the year you are competing.
Two of the phase names are worth noticing. "Red Carpet (Evening Wear)" and "Social Impact Pitch" are the newer Miss America phase branding. The pitch is the phase you will repeat most often, to judges and then to every sponsor you approach, so it helps to turn your written plan into a short deck you can walk someone through rather than re-explaining it each time. Several other state organizations still print "evening gown" and "social impact initiative," so if you are reading across states, the same round can appear under two names.
Who is the current Miss Louisiana?
Shelby Bordelon of Sunshine was crowned Miss Louisiana 2026 on June 20, 2026 at the W. L. Jack Howard Theatre in Monroe. She reached the state final as Miss Louisiana Port City, one of the north Louisiana preliminaries, and she finished first runner up at Miss America 2027 on September 6, 2026 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Ella Clark of Baton Rouge holds Miss Louisiana USA 2026, crowned on July 11, 2026 at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. Louisiana's Miss USA state final being staged in another state is a consequence of the shared production arrangement described above: Miss Alabama USA 2026 was crowned the same day at the same venue. Several states in this series hold their Miss USA final outside their own borders, so it is a normal feature of how these licenses are run rather than anything specific to Louisiana.
Has Louisiana ever won Miss America?
No. Louisiana has never won Miss America, though it has finished first runner up four times: Patricia Brant in 1988, Erika Schwarz in 1997, Faith Jenkins in 2001 and Jennifer Dupont in 2005.
The Miss USA record runs the other way. Louisiana has won Miss USA three times, with Eurlyne Howell in 1958, Sharon Brown in 1961 and Ali Landry in 1996, and holds roughly 30 placements. All three winners went on to place at Miss Universe: Howell was third runner up in 1958, Brown fourth runner up in 1961, and Landry reached the top six in 1996.

Can you compete without winning a local title first?
Not on the Miss America side in Louisiana. The local preliminary is the entry point and the state field is built from local winners. Some states operate an at large or virtual route to fill remaining spots. Indiana, for example, awards real local titles through an online competition judged over a video submission and a Zoom interview. Louisiana does not publish an equivalent, so plan on a local.
On the Miss USA side you apply directly and there is no local title at all. And if what appeals to you is competing without a local circuit, travel or an entry deadline in another parish, an online pageant you enter from home removes all three, with the public voting instead of a judging panel.
One caution that applies to every state. If someone contacts you offering a Louisiana local title that does not appear on the state organization's published preliminary list, treat that as a warning sign and check it against the official schedule before paying anything.
