A Mrs. pageant is for women who are currently married. A Miss pageant is for women who have never married and, in most systems, have never had a child. What is the difference between a Mrs. pageant and a Miss pageant?
The difference is marital status. Miss pageants require that you have never been married. Most also require that you have never given birth. Mrs. pageants require the opposite: you must be legally married at the time you enter and stay married through the competition. The best-known are the global Mrs. Universe and Mrs. World systems. Ms. pageants ignore marital history entirely and instead set a higher age floor, which is why they attract women who are divorced, widowed, or simply older than the Miss age ceiling.

What is a Mrs. pageant?
A Mrs. pageant is a competition open only to married women. Mrs. America states that an applicant must be married as of the date of entry and remain married throughout the state and national competitions, must be at least 18, must be a US citizen, and must live in the state she enters. She may enter only one state pageant per year. Mrs. United States sets its floor at 21, requires that a contestant currently be married at the time of competition, and explicitly notes that she may or may not have previously given birth.
Mrs. Universe casts wider than the US systems. It accepts married, divorced, and widowed women aged 18 to 55, and asks contestants to be involved in a cause. That combination of a real career, a family, and an advocacy platform is what most Mrs. systems are built around. You are not competing as a promising young woman. You are competing as an adult with a life already in progress.
What is a Miss pageant?
A Miss pageant is for young, never-married women. Miss America requires contestants to be 18 to 28, unmarried, not pregnant, and without children. Miss World and Miss Earth both bar married women and mothers and cap entry in the late twenties; the full Miss Earth age limit spells out the exact cutoff. Miss International sets its window at 19 to 30 by July 1 of the competition year and requires a contestant to be single, never married, and never to have given birth.
Two big names broke from that. Miss Universe began allowing married and pregnant contestants in 2023 and removed its upper age limit in 2024. Miss USA, its American qualifier, has no upper age cap and welcomes mothers. So a married 34 year old mother can compete for Miss USA and cannot compete for Miss America. That single inconsistency is responsible for most of the confusion on this topic.
What is a Ms. pageant?
A Ms. pageant is a division defined by age rather than marriage. The Ms. America Pageant is open to women 26 and older who are single, divorced, widowed, or married, and its published contestant age range has run from the late twenties into the sixties. Ms. Senior America opens at 60. The Ms. title exists because a large group of women fall through the gap: too old for Miss, not married, so ineligible for Mrs.
If you are divorced, a Ms. division is usually your natural home. Mrs. systems require a current marriage, and a divorce ends eligibility even if you competed as Mrs. the year before.
Can married women enter a Miss pageant?
Sometimes. Miss USA and Miss Universe allow it. Miss America, Miss World, Miss Earth, and Miss International do not, and all four also bar mothers. The word Miss in a pageant name is a strong hint but not a guarantee, so read the eligibility page of the specific system rather than assuming. Do you have to have children to enter a Mrs. pageant?

What every Mrs. system does require is that the marriage be current and legal, and most ask for a marriage certificate during paperwork review. A pending divorce is a problem. A childless marriage is not.

Which pageant division should you enter?
Answer three questions in order. Are you currently and legally married? If yes, a Mrs. division is open to you and no Miss division except Miss USA and Miss Universe is. Have you ever been married, or do you have a child? If yes and you are not married now, Miss America, Miss World, Miss Earth, and Miss International are closed, and Ms. divisions are your route. If you have never married, have no children, and are under about 28, every door is open, and the question becomes which system you actually want.
Then check the age. Under 28 and never married, you have the widest choice you will ever have. Between 28 and 60, unmarried, and the traditional map thins out fast: Miss USA, Ms. America, and little else until Ms. Senior America opens at 60. That gap is real, and it catches thousands of women who assumed a pageant would still be there when they were ready.
What if none of the three divisions fit?
Then look at pageants that never adopted the Miss, Ms., and Mrs. split in the first place.
