To become Miss Michigan you must be a woman aged 18 to 28 who has never married, has no children, and lives in Michigan, and you must first win one of the local titles held around the state. Winning a local qualifies you for the Miss Michigan competition, held each June at the Frauenthal Theatre in Muskegon. Miss Michigan USA sits on the separate Miss USA side, where national casting sets no upper age limit and accepts married women and mothers, and where Michigan offers three alternative ways to prove residency instead of one.
Michigan is an unusual state to target, and it is worth knowing why before you pick a lane. Most states are strong on one side of American pageantry and weak on the other. Michigan is strong on both. It has produced four Miss USA winners and five Miss America winners, a double record only a handful of states can match. That means whichever system you enter, you are entering a state with a genuine winning tradition and, realistically, deep local competition.

What are the Miss Michigan requirements?
Miss Michigan is the Michigan preliminary to Miss America, run by the Miss Michigan Scholarship Program. The requirements published for the current cycle are:
- Be female and at least 18 years old on or before September 1, 2027
- Be no older than 28 as of September 30, 2027
- Have never been married and have never had a marriage annulled
- Not be pregnant and not be the parent of a child
- Live, work, or attend school in Michigan
- Be a United States citizen
- Hold a current Miss America Organization membership, which costs $49.99 per year
- Win a local title before competing at the state level
Those two dates are the part people get wrong, and they are worth reading twice.
What is the Miss Michigan age limit?
The Miss Michigan age limit is 18 to 28. You must be at least 18 on or before September 1 of the cycle year and no older than 28 as of September 30 of that same cycle year. The teen division runs 14 to 18 measured against the same two dates.
Here is the trap. Michigan publishes its rules for Cycle 2029, which anchors those dates to September 1, 2027 and September 30, 2027. Several other states are still publishing the previous cycle. Texas, for example, publishes September 1, 2026 and September 30, 2026. The age band is identical in both states, 18 to 28. Only the anchor year differs, because Michigan rolls forward to the next cycle earlier than most states do.
If you compare two state websites side by side and see different years, do not assume the age rules are different. Check which cycle each page is describing first. Do you have to win a local title to compete in Miss Michigan?
Yes. On the Miss America side in Michigan, a local title is required. There is no advertised at-large or direct-entry route into the Miss division at the state level. You compete in one of the local competitions held across Michigan, and if you win, you advance to the state competition in June as that local titleholder.
Grace Hanke, the current Miss Michigan, is a clean example of how this works in practice. She competed as Miss Oakland County, won that local title, and carried it into the state competition, where she was crowned on June 20, 2026 at the 87th annual Miss Michigan scholarship competition. She is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Detroit Mercy, is from Hazel Park, and left the state competition with $11,000 in scholarships. She represented Michigan at Miss America in Florida in September 2026.
The practical consequence of the local-title rule is that your real deadline is not the June state date. It is whenever the local competition you plan to enter holds its own event, which is typically months earlier. Missing a local means waiting a full year.
How do you enter the Miss Michigan pageant?
- Confirm your age against the correct cycle. For Cycle 2029, you need to be 18 by September 1, 2027 and not older than 28 on September 30, 2027.
- Buy the Miss America Organization membership. It runs $49.99 per year and is required before you can compete anywhere in the system, in any state.
- Find a local competition. Michigan locals are spread across the state and each sets its own entry date, fee, and paperwork deadline.
- Prepare your community service initiative, talent, and interview. The Miss America format is interview-weighted and the talent portion is still part of the Miss division.
- Win the local, then compete at state in June in Muskegon.
What are the Miss Michigan USA requirements?
Miss Michigan USA feeds Miss USA, not Miss America, and the rules are meaningfully looser. The national Miss USA casting rules for the current cycle state that you must be born in 2007 or earlier, and they set no upper age limit at all. Marital status is not a barrier, and women with children are eligible. There is no talent competition on this side.
A note on sourcing. Michigan's own Miss USA state website, missmichiganusa.com, currently serves an expired security certificate and will not load cleanly in a normal browser. That is not unusual: this is the sixth state Miss USA site in this guide series that has been dead, expired, or password-gated. Because of that, the state-level figures below are reported from the published wording circulating through pageant coverage rather than quoted from the state site itself, while the national rules are taken directly from Miss USA casting.
Be careful with third-party directories here. Many of them still repeat the pre-2023 Miss USA rulebook, which said 18 to 27, never married, no children, and six months residency. That rulebook is out of date and copying it will give you the wrong answer on all four points.
Do you have to live in Michigan to compete for Miss Michigan USA?
This is where Michigan does something genuinely distinctive. Instead of one residency test, Michigan publishes three alternatives, and you only need to satisfy one of them:
- Maintain a permanent and primary residence in Michigan for 90 days before the state pageant, or
- Be a full-time student at a Michigan school for one full semester before the state pageant, or
- Hold full-time employment in Michigan of at least 40 hours per week for the 90 days before the state pageant
The employment clause is the one you will not find in most states. It means a woman who lives just over the border but works a full-time Michigan job can qualify on the strength of her job alone. Then there is the national layer, which overrides all of it for the open-casting route. Miss USA casting states verbatim that "You are not required to be a resident now or previous to this casting opportunity in any of the states for which you may be considered." In other words, the open casting route carries no state residency requirement whatsoever.

Amber Uhler was appointed Miss Michigan USA 2026 on July 30, 2026, and she is from Tampa, Florida. She also arrived from the Mrs. system rather than the Miss system, having held Mrs. Florida America 2024 and Mrs. USA 2025. A Florida-based former Mrs. titleholder holding the Michigan crown is about as direct a demonstration as you will get that the residency and marital-status rules on the Miss USA side are not what most people assume.

Where is the Miss Michigan pageant held?
The Miss Michigan state competition is held at the Frauenthal Theatre in Muskegon, on the Lake Michigan side of the state, each June. Muskegon has a population of roughly 38,000 and sits about three hours from Detroit.
That is worth planning around and most guides skip it. The majority of Michigan's population, and the majority of its pageant candidates, live on the Detroit side of the state. Competition week in Muskegon means a cross-state trip, lodging for several nights, and travel costs for any family or supporters who want to attend. Very few state finals are held this far from the state's population center, so budget for it rather than assuming a day trip.
How much does it cost to compete for Miss Michigan?
The fixed, published cost is the Miss America Organization membership at $49.99 per year. Everything above that varies: local competition entry fees, wardrobe, competition-week lodging in Muskegon, travel, and coaching if you use it. Local fees are set by each local competition rather than by the state.
Scholarship money runs the other way. Grace Hanke left the 2026 state competition with $11,000 in scholarships. This question comes up constantly because modeling agencies do publish height minimums and people assume pageants work the same way. They do not. What if you are not eligible for Miss Michigan?
Plenty of people reading this will fail one of the Miss Michigan bars: over 28, married, a mother, or living outside the state. None of those close off competing generally.
The Miss USA side removes the age ceiling and the marital bars outright. The Mrs. system exists specifically for married women. And online competitions remove the geography and travel problem entirely, which matters more than it sounds when the state final is a three-hour drive from Detroit.
