To become Miss Indiana you have to win a local title first, and Indiana is the one state in this series that will award you one without you leaving the house. The Miss Indiana organization runs an official at-large Virtual Competition, judged by a panel of five from three cell-phone videos and an eight minute Zoom interview, and its winners get a real crown, a real sash and a local mentor. Everything else follows the Miss America pattern, but that one route changes who can realistically compete.

Where an organization publishes nothing on a point, this guide says so rather than guessing.
Can you compete for a Miss Indiana local title online?
Yes. The Miss Indiana organization publishes an at-large Virtual Competition whose stated purpose is to "fill the final spots on the road to Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana's Teen". You submit three videos "filmed on a cell phone in horizontal format" and sit "an 8 minute Zoom interview". "A panel of 5 judges" scores the submissions. Winners "receive a crown and sash and a Local Mentor will be assigned to you", which puts you on exactly the same footing as someone who won a title on a stage.
The cost is a "$30 American Heart Association donation + $100 Local Competition Fee". The window is narrow: in the most recent published cycle registration closed on Wednesday March 4, with the competition and results on March 8. It opens once a year, so if you miss it you are waiting twelve months. Since the same footage is worth posting once you have filmed it, a tool that recuts one video into channel-native versions saves you shooting separately for the judges and for your own audience.
This matters most if the local covering your county has already run. Indiana's local calendar is spread from July through the following March, and if the one you were eligible for happened in August you would ordinarily be out of options until the next cycle. The virtual route is the state organization's own answer to that problem. What are the requirements to be Miss Indiana?
On the Miss America side you must be at least 18, meet the state age cap, be a United States citizen, satisfy a residency test, and win a local competition. Indiana's residency wording is the standard Miss America formulation: "living full-time as a resident of your state, or employed full-time in person, or enrolled full-time as a student at an accredited school/college", with the national requirement of 120 consecutive days attaching to it.
There is no height requirement and no weight requirement. The state site publishes no rule about marital status or children on the Miss side, so do not assume one exists and do not assume one does not: ask the state office if it applies to you.
What is the age limit for Miss Indiana?
Indiana publishes the cap as "must be NO OLDER than 28 on September 30, 2027, and no younger than 18 on Sept 1, 2026". Read those two dates again, because they sit in different cycle years. The national Miss America rule states both bounds inside the same year: "no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2026 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2026".
We are not going to quietly correct Indiana's page to what we think it meant. The upper bound of 28 is unambiguous and matches the national rule. The lower bound is the one carrying the odd year, and if you are turning 18 around that date it is the difference between competing and waiting. Email the state office and get the answer in writing before you pay anything. The Miss Indiana USA side has no upper age limit at all
Miss Indiana USA states plainly that "The age limit for Miss Indiana USA contestants has been eliminated". The only age condition left is that you must be "18 years of age by the state pageant final competition date". If you are 30, 40 or 55 and the Miss America cap has closed that door, this one is still open.
The marital and parental restrictions people associate with Miss USA apply to the Teen division only in Indiana. The teen rules require a contestant to "not be married, never have been married, and never have had a marriage annulled" and to "never have given birth to a child, can not be pregnant or be a parent". The Miss division carries no such rule. Maryland splits it the same way, so this is a divisional distinction rather than an Indiana quirk.
Do you have to live in Indiana to compete for Miss Indiana?
You have to satisfy a residency test, which is not the same as having grown up there. Miss Indiana USA is unusually precise about it and gives you three alternatives, each with a stated duration: live in Indiana "for at least ninety (90) days immediately before the state pageant"; or attend school there full-time for "one full semester, trimester or summer session immediately prior"; or work there full-time at "at least forty (40) hours per week" for "at least ninety (90) days before the date of the State Pageant".
Ninety days is the Miss USA figure. One hundred and twenty consecutive days is the Miss America figure. They are different numbers on different sides of the same state, and mixing them up is the most common way people miscalculate their own eligibility. The USA side also requires you to be "a Citizen of the United States", "recognized medically and legally as a female", and "of good health and moral character", and to have "never have participated in a previous national MISS USA Pageant". There is no height or weight requirement.
Do you have to win a local pageant to compete for Miss Indiana?
On the Miss America side, yes, but Indiana gives you 22 published locals plus the virtual route, which is a wide field by any standard. Twelve of them are open to any Indiana resident: Banks of the Wabash, Cardinal, Central Indiana, Hoosier Valley, Metropolitan, Northeast, Northern Indiana, Northwest Territory, South Bend, Southern Heartland, Hoosier Heritage and Spirit of Indiana.
Ten more are zoned by county, so where you live decides whether you may enter at all. Crossroads to America covers six counties, Capital City nine including Marion, Elkhart County eleven, Fall Festival fourteen, Fort Wayne three, Harvest Homecoming five, Kiwanis Balloon Fest thirteen, Limberlost two, Ohio Valley fourteen, and White River fifteen, the largest single zone recorded in this series.
The practical advice is to check the zoned locals first, because that is where the field is smallest, then fall back on the open twelve, then the virtual competition if the calendar has run away from you. On the Miss Indiana USA side none of this applies: it takes direct entry, with no local title required.
How is Miss Indiana scored?
Indiana publishes its phases but not its weights, and that distinction matters. The phases are a ten minute Private Interview, a 90 second Talent routine, Evening Gown, Fitness in Rebel Athletic apparel, and an On-Stage Interview on your Community Service Initiative.
The Rebel Athletic requirement is worth noting as a budget item, because it names a specific brand for the fitness phase rather than leaving the outfit to you. As for the split, the Miss America organization standard published by Wisconsin and Maryland is 30 percent interview, 20 talent, 20 evening gown, 20 fitness and 10 on-stage conversation. One detail worth flagging: Empower2 Productions is based in Indianapolis, so unlike several states in this series Indiana's Miss USA competition is run from inside the state. In Maryland it is run from Florida and in Wisconsin from Iowa, which turns competition weekend into an out-of-state trip. Indiana entrants are spared that. Has Indiana ever won Miss America?
Yes, once. Katie Stam, Miss Indiana 2008, won Miss America 2009 with a vocal talent, and also took the Preliminary Swimsuit Award and was a Quality of Life Award finalist. Indiana has come close several times besides: Carol Mitchell in 1952, Ann Garnier in 1953, Barbara Mougin in 1978 and Nicole Rash in 2008 all finished first runner-up, and Eileen Smith in 1966, Shelli Yoder in 1993 and Cydney Bridges in 2024 all finished second.
On the Miss USA side Indiana has never won. It has 15 placements, the best being Holli Dennis as first runner-up in 1981, with Kelly Lloyd in 2002 and Elaine Richards in 1966 both second and Alexis Lete third in 2020.
The current titleholders: Miss Indiana 2026 is Ellise Edwards of Corydon, 22, crowned on June 20, 2026 at the STAR Bank Performing Arts Center in Zionsville, competing as Miss Harvest Homecoming. Her talent is lyrical dance and her platform is "Everyday Influencer". She first got involved with the organization at 12, placed in the top five of Miss Indiana's Teen every year from 12 to 17, and won her local title in August 2025, which is a useful corrective to the idea that these things are won on a first attempt. Miss Indiana USA 2026 is Eniola Oke of Brownsburg, crowned June 28, 2026 at Noblesville High School.
How much does it cost to compete in Indiana?
The published figure that exists is for the virtual route: a $30 American Heart Association donation plus a $100 local competition fee. Individual locals set their own entry fees and Indiana does not publish them centrally, so you have to ask each director.
What is published is not where the money goes. Where Slavic heritage fits in Indiana
Indiana's Slavic story runs through South Bend. Working-class Polish immigrants were among the first groups to arrive there in the mid to late 19th century, first building the Michigan Central Railroad line toward Chicago, then filling the factory floors of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, Studebaker and the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The community founded four Polish parishes: St. Hedwig in 1877, still regarded as the mother parish of Polish South Bend, followed by St. Casimir, St. Stanislaus and St. Adalbert.
The first settlement clustered along Division, Chapin, Scott and Sample streets, and St. Hedwig's school closed the 1899 term with 1,025 pupils, the largest enrollment of any school in the city at the time. That heritage is still present in northern Indiana, and if it is part of your own family story it is something you can compete under rather than merely mention.
