Miss World requires contestants to be women aged 18 to 27 at the time of the international final, unmarried, and without children, including adopted or stepchildren. There is no height or weight requirement published by the Miss World Organization, despite the 5 foot 3 minimum you will see quoted all over the internet: that number comes from individual national franchises, not from a global rulebook. You cannot enter Miss World directly. You compete in your own country's national pageant, and only that national winner goes to the international final. Miss World dropped its swimsuit round in 2015 and scores a charity project instead.

Updated July 2026

Miss World is the oldest of the big international pageants, and it is also the one with the strictest front door. Miss Universe spent the last three years tearing out its age cap and its ban on married women and mothers. Miss World kept both. If you are 28, married, or a parent, the international Miss World stage is closed to you, and no amount of preparation changes that. That is worth knowing before you spend a season and a few thousand dollars chasing it. Here is what the rules actually say, where the famous height number really comes from, and what the path looks like from the United States.

What are the requirements for Miss World?

Eligibility comes down to six things: age, gender, marital status, whether you have children, nationality, and the national title. The Miss World Organization sets the international floor, and each country's franchise is free to layer stricter rules on top for its own competition. That is why the rules you have to meet at home are often tighter than the ones you read about internationally.

What is the age limit for Miss World?

The age limit for Miss World is 27. You must be at least 18 and no older than 27 at the time of the international final, which makes it one of the tighter windows in international pageantry. National franchises sometimes run a narrower band than that: in the United States the entry age is commonly given as 18 to 26, because a delegate crowned this year has to still be inside the international limit when she competes.

This is the single biggest difference between Miss World and its main rival. Miss Universe requirements no longer include any upper age limit at all, so a woman who has aged out of Miss World at 28 can still compete at Miss Universe. If age is what is standing between you and a stage, our guide to the beauty pageant age limit lays out every division by age band.

Is there a height requirement for Miss World?

The Miss World Organization does not publish a height requirement. The 5 foot 3 minimum you will find repeated on dozens of pageant guides traces back to national franchise entry forms, not to an international rule, and it is not applied uniformly across countries. Check the entry rules of the franchise you would actually be entering, because that document is the one that can stop your application.

If height is the thing you are worried about, it is worth reading how the rest of the field handles it. Our guide to beauty pageant height requirements compares every major title, and the short version is that the big American pageants have no height rule at all.

What are the qualifications to become Miss World?

Meeting the eligibility rules gets you an application, not a place. To actually become Miss World you have to win your country's national pageant first, then place at the international final against roughly 100 other national titleholders. The realistic qualification list is: you fit the age and marital rules, you can commit roughly a month to the international event, you have a genuine charity project you can document, and you can carry a year of full-time appearances if you win.

How do you enter Miss World from the United States?

You enter through the American national franchise, not through Miss World itself. The organization licenses one franchise per country, that franchise runs its own competition, and its winner is the only American who goes to the international final. Practically, that means finding the current US franchise holder, checking its entry window and age band, and competing at the state or national level it runs. Franchise holders do change hands between editions, so verify who holds the license for the edition you are targeting rather than trusting a guide from three years ago.

Does Miss World have a swimsuit round?

No. Miss World eliminated the swimsuit competition in 2015, after 63 years, when chairwoman Julia Morley said there did not seem to be a purpose to having it. It is the only one of the three biggest international titles to have removed it entirely: Miss Universe still runs a swimsuit round, and Miss America dropped its own in 2018. If the swimsuit round is what has kept you out of pageants, our guide to the beauty pageant swimsuit round covers which competitions still have one.

What is Beauty with a Purpose and is it scored?

Beauty with a Purpose is Miss World's charity round, launched by Julia Morley in 1972, and it is the closest thing the pageant has to a talent requirement. Each delegate presents a real social project she has run in her own country, usually for children, the sick, or the underprivileged, and it is judged as a fast-track category that can carry a contestant straight into the finals. It is not decoration. A weak project is a real competitive disadvantage.

How is Miss World judged?

Alongside Beauty with a Purpose, Miss World runs fast-track challenges in Top Model, Sports, Talent, and the Multimedia Challenge, plus a series of interviews and a Head to Head round. Winning a fast-track category can put you in the final group before the show even airs. That is a very different scoring model from a single competition night, and it rewards delegates who prepare across all five tracks rather than peaking on stage. Our breakdown of beauty pageant judging criteria explains how these weightings usually work.

What is the difference between Miss World and Miss Universe?

They are separate organizations with different rules, different owners, and different scoring philosophies. The gap in eligibility is now wide enough to decide which one you can even enter.

What if you do not qualify for Miss World?

Most women reading this page do not qualify, and that is a rules problem rather than a you problem. The age cap of 27, the ban on married women, and the ban on mothers together disqualify the majority of adult American women before anything else is considered. The national title requirement then removes almost everyone else, because there is exactly one American delegate per edition. If you are weighing your options, our comparison of the full beauty pageant eligibility requirements shows which majors have dropped their age and marital rules and which still enforce them.

Our own competition is built the other way around. MissSlavic is an online pageant with no age cap, no height requirement, no swimsuit round, no talent round, and no national title to win first. Married women and mothers compete on the same terms as everyone else. Entry is free, judging happens on camera and through public voting, and you can enter the pageant from home this week. If you want to see how the voting actually works before you commit, our page on beauty pageant voting explains the counting rules in full. Funding a traditional pageant run is a different project entirely, and it usually comes down to sponsorship: when you get to that stage, working through a list of local businesses in organized outreach batches beats sending one hopeful email at a time.

Frequently asked questions about Miss World requirements

Can a married woman compete in Miss World?

No. Miss World requires contestants to be unmarried, and that rule has not changed while its competitors relaxed theirs. Married women who want an international stage should look at Miss Universe, which has allowed married contestants since 2023, or at the Mrs America pageant system, which is built specifically for married women and feeds into Mrs World.

Can you compete in Miss World if you have children?

No. Contestants must have no children, and the rule explicitly includes adopted children and stepchildren. This is stricter than Miss Universe, where mothers have been eligible since 2023.

What is the minimum height for Miss World?

There is no minimum height published by the Miss World Organization. The 5 foot 3 figure that appears on many pageant sites comes from national franchise entry rules rather than an international standard, so the number that matters is whatever your own country's franchise prints on its entry form.

Is there a weight requirement for Miss World?

No. Miss World publishes no weight requirement, no body measurement requirement, and no size limit. Reports of specific measurements for Miss World contestants describe the women who happened to compete, not a rule anyone had to meet.

How much does it cost to compete in Miss World?

The international final itself is funded by the organization and the national franchise, but getting there is expensive. National-level competition brings entry fees, wardrobe, coaching, travel, and headshots, and a serious run at a national title commonly runs into the thousands of dollars. Our breakdown of what it costs to enter a beauty pageant itemizes where the money goes.

How do you become Miss World?

Win your country's national pageant, then win the international final. There is no other route, no wildcard entry, and no direct application to the international organization. Everything before the national title is preparation for a competition you have to win first.

Does Miss World have a talent round?

Talent is one of Miss World's fast-track challenges rather than a mandatory round for every delegate. Contestants who enter it perform and can win the category outright, which fast-tracks them toward the finals. Our guide to the beauty pageant talent round covers what these performances look like and how they are scored.
