The short answer
Can you enter a Croatian beauty pageant if you live in the United States?
Not the national ones. Miss Universe Hrvatske, the 30-year-old title whose winner goes to Miss Universe, states on its official application that entry is open to Croatian women citizens with residence in the Republic of Croatia who have turned 18 by January 1 of the year they apply. The form even asks whether you hold a second citizenship, but a Croatian passport by descent does not give you the Croatian address it requires. Miss Hrvatske, the Miss World route, recruits through the Croatian press for women aged 16 and a half to 26, and its finals and preparations take place in Croatia. We also looked for a Croatian American heritage pageant, the kind Czech and Slovak Americans run in Nebraska, and found none operating in 2026, despite Croatian communities in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cleveland, New York and San Pedro. That leaves this route. MissSlavic is an online pageant for women of Slavic heritage, open 18 and over with no upper age limit, married or single, mothers welcome, with no residence rule and no travel. Entry is free and takes about two minutes.

Why MissSlavic works for Croatian American contestants
Croatia takes its pageants seriously: Miss Universe Hrvatske has crowned thirty winners and its 2025 titleholder reached the top 30 at Miss Universe. Both national titles are also built for women who live in Croatia, and that is the line the diaspora cannot cross.
Residence, not just citizenship
The Miss Universe Hrvatske application form says entry is for Croatian citizens with residence in the Republic of Croatia. Many Croatian Americans qualify for citizenship by descent, and the form asks about dual citizenship, but the registered address has to be Croatian. A third generation woman from Pittsburgh or San Pedro with a Croatian passport and a US address fails that test before anything else is judged.
Miss Hrvatske stops at 26
The Miss World route, run by Direkcija Miss Hrvatske, calls for candidates aged 16 and a half to 26 in its recruiting notices, and its application site did not respond when we checked it in September 2026. If you are 27 or older, that door is closed regardless of where you live. MissSlavic has no upper age limit at all.
No married or motherhood rule here, and no ceiling
Miss Universe dropped its marriage and motherhood ban in 2023, and the Croatian form no longer asks about either, which is a real improvement. It still requires the Croatian address and still runs its castings, preparations and final inside Croatia: the 2026 edition was prepared in Zagreb and on the island of Pag, with the final at the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel on May 25. The largest Croatian diaspora has no pageant of its own
The revised 2010 census counted 414,714 Americans of Croatian ancestry, and Croatia's State Office for Croats Abroad estimates 1.2 million Croatians and descendants in the United States, the largest Croatian community outside the country. Los Angeles declared May 2026 Croatian American Heritage Month, and Seattle's CroatiaFest returns on October 4, 2026. Yet we found no Croatian American heritage pageant. Choosing Croatia here is the one way to compete under that flag from the US today.

To be fair to the Croatian titles, they do things we do not. Miss Universe Hrvatske has run for thirty editions, its 2026 final was streamed live by Jutarnji.hr and broadcast on CMC TV, and its winner, Antea Mršić of Zagreb, represents Croatia at Miss Universe in Puerto Rico in November 2026. Her predecessor Laura Gnjatović of Zadar reached the top 30 at Miss Universe 2025. Miss Hrvatske has sent a Croatian to Miss World since 1992. We send nobody to Miss Universe or Miss World. What we offer is a door that is open to the diaspora: no residence rule, no age ceiling, no marital rule, and no fee.

Czech and Slovak Americans have a national heritage pageant in Wilber, Nebraska, but we found no Croatian American equivalent running in 2026, even in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cleveland, New York or San Pedro, where the largest communities live. Both Croatian national titles are held inside Croatia. MissSlavic runs a Croatia contest online that women of Croatian heritage in the US can enter today.

Croatian Americans whose families came from Herzegovina, Istria, the Bay of Kotor or the Burgenland villages can choose Croatia if that is the heritage they identify with.
