Every pageant follows the same basic machinery. A director opens applications for a title, screens entrants against eligibility rules, and books a competition date. Contestants prepare wardrobe and interview answers, arrive for rehearsals, then compete in a fixed set of scored rounds in front of a judge panel. Judges score independently on a printed or digital sheet, an auditor totals the scores, and the top scorer is crowned. The winner signs a contract committing her to appearances, sponsor obligations, and usually to competing at the next level up.
The parts that vary between systems are which rounds exist and how heavily each one counts. That is where the character of a pageant lives. A system that gives forty percent to the private interview is looking for a spokeswoman, and a system that keeps a swimwear round is weighting stage presentation more heavily.

How are beauty pageants scored?
Judges score each contestant in each round on a fixed scale, usually one to ten, and never see each other's sheets during competition. An independent auditor collects the sheets, applies the published weightings, and produces a ranked total. Most systems drop the highest and lowest score in a round to blunt one judge's outlier opinion, and many use ordinal ranking rather than raw points in the finals so that a single generous judge cannot carry a contestant.
Scores are reset or carried differently depending on the system. Some carry preliminary scores into the finals, others zero them out so the top ten start even. Read the handbook before you compete, because that one rule changes your whole strategy: if scores carry, the preliminary interview is where the title is won.
What are the levels of beauty pageants?

What happens at a beauty pageant?
The public show is the smallest part of it. A typical competition weekend starts with registration and paperwork, then orientation, then the private interviews, which usually happen a full day before anyone sees a stage. Rehearsal blocks follow: opening number choreography, walking patterns, spacing marks, and lighting checks. The evening show is the compressed, produced version of everything already scored, plus the on-stage question for finalists and the crowning.
Contestants are typically sequestered from the judges for the whole weekend. Talking to a judge outside the competition rounds is one of the fastest ways to be disqualified in most systems.
How long does a beauty pageant last?
The public show runs about two hours. The competition around it usually runs two to four days for a state or national title, and up to three weeks for an international final where delegates arrive early for tourism appearances, preliminary competition, and press. Local pageants often compress everything into a single day.
How do you get into a beauty pageant?
You apply directly to the director of a specific title. There is an application form, an eligibility check against age, residency, and marital status, usually a headshot, sometimes a phone or video interview, and an entry fee or a sponsorship requirement. Directors recruit as well, so being visible in local competitions and on social media brings invitations.
The gate that stops most people is not talent, it is eligibility. Who pays for a beauty pageant?
Three sources: contestant entry fees, sponsors, and ticket or broadcast revenue. Entry fees cover the production floor. Sponsors cover the rest, which is why so much of a director's year is spent asking local businesses for money, and why contestants are often asked to raise sponsorship themselves as part of the entry. Directors who run this well treat it as a sales pipeline and send personalized sponsor emails at scale rather than reworking one letter over and over.
