Tennessee is the only state in this series where "Miss Tennessee" means two different crowns. The state broke away from Miss America in 2019, a rival organization was built in its place, and both now run. Here is which one you would actually be entering.

What beauty pageants can you enter in Tennessee?
Tennessee has more state level routes than any other state in this series, because it has two competing versions of the same title. Miss Tennessee is the Miss America preliminary, and its state final is competed at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville. Miss Tennessee Volunteer is a separate organization built after the state cut ties with Miss America in 2019, it competes at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson, and its winner advances to Miss Volunteer America rather than to Miss America. Miss Tennessee USA is the Miss USA preliminary, historically held at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville. Ms. Tennessee Senior America covers women 60 and older. A woman may compete in both Miss Tennessee and Miss Tennessee Volunteer, and many do, so the first question to answer in this state is not whether you are eligible but which crown you are actually chasing.

Four things that decide which Tennessee pageant you can enter
Tennessee trips people up on identity rather than eligibility. Two organizations use nearly the same title and send their winners to different national finals. Check these four before you pay anything.
There are two rival Miss Tennessee titles, and they lead to different national pageants
This is the Tennessee gate and nothing like it exists in the other twelve states in this series. In May 2019 the Tennessee state pageant cut ties with the Miss America Organization, one of four state programs that took action against the national body during the restructuring of that period. Allison DeMarcus then built the Miss Tennessee Volunteer Pageant, which feeds a separate national final called Miss Volunteer America. The Miss America Organization re-established its own Miss Tennessee. Both titles exist today, both are legitimate, and both are called some version of "Miss Tennessee". If you win the Volunteer title you do not go to Miss America. If you win the Miss America affiliated title you do not go to Miss Volunteer America. Establish which organization is running a competition before you enter it, because the name alone will not tell you.
Miss Tennessee accepts three different residency tests, and you only need one
The state publishes a residency rule far wider than most people assume. You satisfy it if you reside in Tennessee, or if you attend an accredited Tennessee college or university full time, or if you work full time in the state. Any one of the three is enough. That third option matters more than it sounds: a woman who lives across the line in northern Mississippi, southern Kentucky or western North Carolina but holds a full time job in Memphis, Clarksville or Chattanooga can satisfy the Tennessee test through employment alone. Only Michigan and the New Jersey Miss USA program publish a comparably wide set of alternatives.
Tennessee runs an at-large route, so a local title is not the only way in
Unlike Virginia, Texas and North Carolina, where the local circuit is the only door, Tennessee lets candidates apply at large in addition to competing for a local title. That removes the single hardest scheduling constraint in state pageantry, which is that missing your local season costs you a full year. Miss Virginia Volunteer, the Volunteer system chapter in the neighboring state, is at large as well. Check the current cycle deadlines directly with the organization, because at-large windows are typically shorter and earlier than people expect.
Miss Tennessee USA published no eligibility rules at all, and its 2026 titleholder was appointed rather than crowned
The Miss Tennessee USA website is live, but when checked in August 2026 it carried only a hall of fame of past titleholders and no eligibility page whatsoever. So the national Miss USA casting rules are the reliable source, not the state site. There is a second signal worth reading here. Sydney Grace Young of Clarksville was appointed Miss Tennessee USA 2026 on June 30, 2026 following an open casting call run by the national organization, rather than winning a state pageant. That is a real change in how the Miss USA side operates, and it is consistent with the national casting rules, which state that residency in the state you represent is not required at all.

How to enter a Tennessee pageant this year
The sequence in Tennessee starts one step earlier than in other states, because you have to choose an organization before you choose a competition.
Decide which national final you actually want
This is step one in Tennessee and nowhere else. If you want Miss America, you want the Miss Tennessee run by the Miss America Organization, competed in Nashville. If you want Miss Volunteer America, you want Miss Tennessee Volunteer, competed in Jackson. If you want Miss USA and eventually Miss Universe, you want the Miss Tennessee USA route, which now runs largely through national open casting. Nothing prevents you competing in more than one system, but they have different phases, different preparation and different calendars, so pick your primary before you spend.
Check your age against the right cycle year
Tennessee publishes cycle 28, which covers competitions held after June 2026, and it states the band as no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2027 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2027. Note the year: those are 2027 dates, not 2026 ones, because the state has already rolled forward to the next cycle. Read the cycle year off the page before you compare Tennessee to any other state, because state organizations roll over at different times and comparing two states on different cycles produces a difference that is not really there.
Apply at large or pick a local, and prepare a talent either way
Both the Miss America affiliated route and the Volunteer route score talent, so it absorbs the most preparation time regardless of which you choose. The Volunteer system is worth understanding on its own terms: it scores fitness and wellness, talent, evening gown and a private interview as four equally weighted categories, which is unusual, since most systems weight the interview most heavily. If your strength is the interview, that weighting is a reason to look closely at the Miss America side instead. Miss Tennessee USA scores no talent at all.
Get judged now rather than waiting on a calendar
Tennessee is friendlier than most states thanks to the at-large route, but a woman can still sit out a year because the cycle deadline passed, because she is over the age band, or because she cannot take a competition week in Nashville or Jackson. Stage time and judged feedback compound, so do not spend that year unscored. An online pageant costs nothing, runs on your own schedule, needs no local title and no travel, and it leaves you with photos and a placement worth putting on a pageant resume.

Tennesseans with Slavic roots
Tennessee's Slavic communities are smaller than those on the coasts but they are real and they are growing. Nashville has the largest, with Russian and Ukrainian families settled around the healthcare and music economies, and it took in a further wave of Ukrainian arrivals after 2022. Memphis carries older Eastern European roots tied to the river trade, Knoxville and Oak Ridge drew Czech, Polish and Russian scientists and engineers to the laboratory economy, and Clarksville's community is shaped by Fort Campbell. If your family came from any Slavic country, you can enter representing it, wherever in Tennessee you live now.

Where we lose: if you want scholarship money, a live stage and a title that leads to Miss America, Miss Volunteer America or Miss USA, a Tennessee state pageant is the only thing that does that, and no online format substitutes for it. Tennessee is also genuinely one of the more open states, because it runs an at-large route and accepts three alternative residency tests, so if you are inside the age band the door here is wider than in Virginia or Texas. We also require Slavic heritage, so if your family is not from one of these countries, the state routes are yours. The Miss America affiliated Miss Tennessee competes at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville, in June. Makalyn Heaslett of Nashville was crowned Miss Tennessee on June 20, 2026 there. Miss Tennessee Volunteer is a different competition held at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson in July.
Karrena Rainey, 24, previously Miss Madison County, was crowned Miss Tennessee Volunteer 2027 in Jackson in late July 2026. The winner serves as the Governor's Character Education Spokesperson and travels the state speaking to young people. She advances to Miss Volunteer America rather than to Miss America, which is the practical difference between the two Tennessee systems.
Both, twice each. Tennessee won Miss America with Barbara Jo Walker in 1947, who competed as Miss Memphis, and Kellye Cash in 1987. It won Miss USA with Lynnette Cole in 2000 and Rachel Smith in 2007. Tennessee also holds 37 placements at Miss USA, the fourth highest of any state behind Texas, California and South Carolina, which makes it a consistently strong state rather than an occasional one.
Not on the Miss America side, which retains the traditional single status and no dependents conditions nationally. Miss USA repealed both, so Miss Tennessee USA accepts married women, divorced women, widows and mothers, and sets no upper age limit. If marriage or motherhood closes one door in Tennessee, the USA side is very likely still open to you.
Miss Volunteer America publishes the age rule as at least 17 and no older than 26 as of the day she competes, is crowned or appointed as the local or state titleholder, which is a rolling test rather than a fixed calendar date. The 26 holds across every state affiliate we have checked, but the floor does not: the West Virginia affiliate publishes 18 rather than 17, so confirm the lower bound with the state you enter. State organizations in the system add United States citizenship, being medically and legally female, never married and not a parent, with residency satisfied as a bonafide resident, a full-time employee or a student. The bars on marriage and children apply on the Miss America side too.
No. Neither Miss Tennessee, Miss Tennessee Volunteer nor Miss Tennessee USA publishes a minimum or maximum height, and contestants are not measured to qualify. The 5 foot 7 figure people repeat comes from runway modeling, not from pageant rulebooks. A small independent pageant in Nashville or Memphis can write its own rule, so check that specific pageant eligibility page before you assume.
Yes. Miss USA repealed its upper age limit, and the national casting rules now ask only that you were born during or before 2007. There is no ceiling. The 2026 Tennessee titleholder, Sydney Grace Young of Clarksville, was appointed following an open casting call rather than winning a state pageant, which shows how that route now works in practice.
The Volunteer system scores four categories with equal weight: fitness and wellness, talent, evening gown and a private interview. Equal weighting is unusual, because most pageant systems weight the private interview most heavily. If the interview is your strongest phase, that weighting works against you and the Miss America side may suit you better. If your talent is strong, it works in your favor.
