Virginia has won Miss America four times, twice since 2010, and has not won Miss USA since 1970. Its own published age cap is a year tighter than the national rule, as Alabama's is. Here is what each door actually asks for.

What beauty pageants can you enter in Virginia?
Virginia has four main routes. Miss Virginia is the Miss America preliminary, it runs off local titles, and the state final is competed at the Berglund Center Auditorium in Roanoke. Miss Virginia USA is the Miss USA preliminary, and since Miss USA dropped its upper age limit and its marital and motherhood bans it is the widest door in the state. Underneath them sits a published local circuit of thirteen dated competitions spread from October through April, from Louisa and Glen Allen down to Virginia Beach, Franklin and Courtland. Ms. Virginia Senior America covers women 60 and older. The unusual part of Virginia is the age line: the state organization publishes a cap a year tighter than the national one and measures it against a different date, so a woman of 27 or 28 needs to ask before she pays.

Four things that decide which Virginia pageant you can enter
Virginia trips people up on the age line specifically, because two official sources disagree. Check these four before you pay anything.
Virginia publishes a tighter age cap than the national organization, and measures it differently
This is the Virginia gate and it is the only case of its kind in the twelve states in this series. The state contestant page heads its age line "Miss America 18-28" and then defines it as "must be 18 by state competition, and no older than 27 at state". The national organization published the 2026 band as delegates "must be no older than 28 years of age as of September 30, 2026 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2026". Two differences follow. The stated ceiling is 27 at state level against 28 nationally, and Virginia measures your age at its own state competition date rather than at the fixed September dates every other state uses. If you are 27 or 28, you are in genuine ambiguity, and the only safe move is to email the state office before you pay a local entry fee. Do not assume the more generous number applies to you.
A local title is required, and Virginia publishes exactly when they run
You cannot enter Miss Virginia directly. You reach the state stage by winning one of the local competitions, and the state lists thirteen with confirmed dates for the 2026 to 2027 cycle. They begin on October 18, 2026 at the Louisa Arts Center and run through April 12, 2027, taking in Glen Allen, Springfield, Roanoke, Marshall, Courtland, Virginia Beach, Southampton, Franklin and Lynchburg along the way. Titles include Miss Greater Richmond, Miss Northern Virginia, Miss Roanoke Valley, Miss Hampton Roads, Miss Coastal Virginia and Miss Central Virginia. Because the local is the qualifying step, whichever of those dates you target is your real deadline, not the June state final.
Virginia still publishes single status and no legal dependents on the Miss America side
The state contestant page lists "Single" and "No legal dependents" among its requirements, alongside United States citizenship and being in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements. This is the Miss America side only. The Miss USA side nationally accepts any marital status, including married, divorced and widowed women, and accepts mothers. So marriage or children close the Miss Virginia door and leave the Miss Virginia USA door open. Note also that Virginia asks you to satisfy the residency requirements for your specific city or state, which means the local competition you enter may set its own residency test that the state page does not spell out.
Both Miss Virginia USA websites are currently unreachable, so treat third-party rules with suspicion
We could not read anything from the Virginia Miss USA organization when checking this page in August 2026. One domain refuses connections outright and the other returns an HTTP 403 error to every request. We therefore quote nothing from it and rely on the national Miss USA casting rules instead, which is the honest thing to do. This matters because stale directories still repeat the pre-2023 Miss USA rulebook, with an age cap of 27, a ban on married contestants and mothers and a six month residency clock. All of that was repealed. If a site tells you Miss Virginia USA has an upper age limit, it is quoting a rulebook that no longer exists.

How to enter a Virginia pageant this year
Virginia gives you a published local calendar, which makes planning easier here than in most states. The sequence is straightforward.
Settle your age question in writing first
Because the state and national age lines disagree, this is step one in Virginia and nowhere else. If you will be 26 or younger at the state competition, you are clear on both readings and can move on. If you will be 27 or 28, email the state organization and get an answer you can point to before you spend anything on a local entry, a gown or coaching. If the answer closes the Miss Virginia door, the Miss USA side has no upper age limit at all, so you have not lost your year.
Pick your local from the published calendar
Virginia is unusually helpful here: the dates, venues and local director contacts are published together. Work out which competitions you are geographically and residentially eligible for, then contact that director directly. Local programs set their own fees and paperwork deadlines, and the state does not publish local fees centrally, so ask about cost at first contact rather than assuming. If you are in Northern Virginia the Springfield date is your nearest, if you are in Hampton Roads the Courtland and Virginia Beach dates are, and if you are in the west the Roanoke and Lynchburg dates are.
Prepare a talent, because the Miss America side scores it
Talent is a scored phase at Miss Virginia and it absorbs more preparation time than anything else on the list. Virginia has a recent history of rewarding an unconventional one: Camille Schrier won Miss America 2020 out of Virginia performing a chemistry demonstration in a lab coat and safety goggles rather than singing or dancing. Miss Virginia USA does not score talent at all, which is a practical reason many women choose that side. Alongside talent, expect to be questioned in interview about a community service initiative you genuinely run.
Get judged now rather than waiting on a calendar
The frustrating part of Virginia is that a woman can be entirely eligible and still sit out a year, because the local nearest her already ran, because the age line is ambiguous for her, or because she cannot take a week off for the state final in Roanoke. Stage time and judged feedback compound, so do not spend that year unscored. An online pageant costs nothing, runs on your own schedule, needs no local title and no travel, and it leaves you with photos and a placement worth putting on a pageant resume.

Virginia's Slavic communities cluster in two places: the Northern Virginia corridor across Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and Woodbridge, where Russian, Ukrainian and Polish families settled around the federal and technology economy, and the Hampton Roads area around Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, shaped by the naval presence. Where we lose: if you want scholarship money, a live stage and a title that leads to Miss USA or Miss America, a Virginia state pageant is the only thing that does that, and no online format substitutes for it. Virginia also publishes its local calendar more clearly than most states, which makes planning a real year of competition easier here than elsewhere. The four largest are Miss Virginia, the Miss America preliminary; Miss Virginia USA, the Miss USA preliminary; the teen divisions of both; and Ms. Virginia Senior America for women 60 and older. Underneath them run thirteen dated local titles that feed the state stage, from Northern Virginia and Greater Richmond down to Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach, plus independent and cultural pageants.
You qualify by winning one of the local titles held across the state between October and April, then compete at the Miss Virginia state final at the Berglund Center Auditorium in Roanoke. You cannot enter the state competition directly. Maddie Marchant of Lebanon, Virginia was crowned Miss Virginia on June 27, 2026 and represented Virginia at Miss America 2027 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
This is where Virginia is genuinely confusing. The state contestant page says you must be 18 by the state competition and no older than 27 at state, while the national Miss America rule for 2026 says no older than 28 as of September 30 and no younger than 18 as of September 1. The state publishes six: be female, be a United States citizen, be single, have no legal dependents, meet the residency requirements for your city or state, and be in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements. On top of those you must fall inside the age band and win a local title to reach the state stage. Talent is a scored phase, and you are expected to run a community service initiative.
The state asks you to meet the residency requirements for your specific city or state, which means the local competition you enter sets the test rather than the state publishing one clock. Separately, the national Miss USA open casting states that you are not required to be a resident of any state you may be considered for, which removes the residency question entirely on that route.

Two dated local competitions are held at Windsor Woods Elementary in Virginia Beach, on December 20, 2026 and March 21, 2027, covering the Miss Chesapeake, Miss Coastal Virginia, Miss Virginia Beach, Miss Indian River and Miss Pungo titles. Nearby Hampton Roads locals run at Courtland in December and Southampton in January, so the coastal end of the state is well served.
The Berglund Center Auditorium in Roanoke, in the west of the state, in June. Contestants from Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, where most of the state population lives, should budget for a long drive and a week of lodging rather than a day trip. Local competitions, by contrast, are spread across the whole state from Springfield down to Franklin.
No. The state page lists single status and no legal dependents as requirements on the Miss America side. Nationally, Miss USA accepts any marital status and women with or without children, so Miss Virginia USA remains open. If marriage or motherhood closes the Miss Virginia door, the USA side is very likely still open to you.
No. Neither Miss Virginia nor Miss Virginia USA publishes a minimum or maximum height, and contestants are not measured to qualify.
