Indiana has two state systems. Miss Indiana is the Miss America preliminary, it keeps a talent phase, and it normally asks you to win a local title first. Miss Indiana USA feeds Miss USA, needs no local title, and has removed its upper age limit so any woman 18 or over can apply. Where Indiana breaks from every other state covered here is the way in: alongside twelve locals open to any Indiana resident and ten more zoned by county, Miss Indiana runs an official virtual at-large competition, judged by five judges from three cell phone videos and an 8 minute Zoom interview, and its winners get a real crown, sash and local mentor. Four things that decide whether you can enter in Indiana
Indiana publishes more about how you get in than most states, and less about how you are scored. These four points are what actually change your odds and your calendar.
You can win a local Miss Indiana title over Zoom
This is the fact that sets Indiana apart. The Miss Indiana organization runs what it calls an at-large virtual competition, and its stated purpose is to fill the final spots on the road to Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana's Teen. You submit three videos, filmed on a cell phone in horizontal format, and sit a private interview over Zoom. A panel of 5 judges reviews the submissions and the 8 minute interview. Winners receive a crown and sash, and a local mentor is assigned to guide you toward the state competition. Entry is a $30 American Heart Association donation plus a $100 local competition fee. In the most recent published cycle registration closed on Wednesday March 4 with the competition and results on March 8, so it is a narrow window that opens once a year. No other state in this series publishes a route like it, and if you live in a county whose local has already passed, it can be the difference between competing this year and waiting twelve months.
Ten locals are zoned by county, twelve are open to the whole state
Indiana runs the widest published set of entry points measured in this series. Twelve locals are open to any Indiana resident: Banks of the Wabash, Cardinal, Central Indiana, Hoosier Valley, Metropolitan, Northeast, Northern Indiana, Northwest Territory, South Bend, Southern Heartland, Hoosier Heritage and Spirit of Indiana. Ten more are closed to named counties, and the zones are large. Miss White River covers fifteen counties and competes September 27, Miss Ohio Valley covers fourteen and competes October 18, Miss Fall Festival covers fourteen and competes October 3, Miss Kiwanis Balloon Fest covers thirteen, Miss Elkhart County covers eleven and competes January 9, Miss Capital City covers nine including Marion County and competes August 23, and Miss Limberlost covers just Lagrange and Noble and competes July 11. Read the county list before the date. If your county appears in a closed zone you can still enter any of the twelve open locals as well.
Miss Indiana USA has no upper age limit and states a clear 90 day clock
The organization writes that the age limit for Miss Indiana USA contestants has been eliminated, and asks only that you be 18 years of age by the state pageant final competition date. Residency is three alternatives and, unlike some states that leave the duration vague, Indiana attaches a number to each: reside in Indiana for at least ninety (90) days immediately before the state pageant, or attend as a full-time student for one full semester, trimester or summer session immediately prior, or hold full-time employment in Indiana of at least forty (40) hours per week for at least ninety (90) days before the date of the State Pageant. You must be a citizen of the United States, recognized medically and legally as a female, and of good health and moral character, and you must never have participated in a previous national Miss USA pageant. There is no height or weight requirement. The never married and no children rule you may have read about applies to the Teen division only, not to Miss.
Indiana publishes its phases but not its scoring weights, and the age dates do not line up
Miss Indiana lists what you will compete in: a 10 minute private interview, a 90 second talent routine, evening gown, fitness in Rebel Athletic apparel, and an on-stage interview about your Community Service Initiative. What it does not publish is how much each is worth. Two states covered here, Wisconsin and Maryland, publish the Miss America organization split of interview 30 percent, fitness 20, talent 20, evening wear 20 and on-stage conversation 10, and there is no reason to think Indiana scores differently, but Indiana itself does not say so. Treat the split as a guide, not as Indiana's published rule. One more thing to check with the state office directly: the age band on the Indiana page reads no older than 28 on September 30, 2027 and no younger than 18 on September 1, 2026, and those two dates sit in different cycle years. The national rule states both bounds in the same year, so confirm the lower bound in writing before you count yourself in or out.

Indiana gives you more doors than any other state here. The work is picking the one that your age, your county and the calendar leave open.
Decide which system fits your age
If you are 29 or older, Miss Indiana USA is your state route and Miss Indiana is not, because the Miss America side caps at 28. If you are 18 to 28 both are open. Miss Indiana USA has no upper limit at all, so a woman in her thirties, forties or beyond is eligible on that side. Confirm the Miss Indiana lower age bound with the state office, since the published dates sit in two different cycle years.
Check your county against the closed locals
Ten Indiana locals are restricted to named counties, and the zones run from two counties at Miss Limberlost to fifteen at Miss White River. Find your county first, because the closed local in your area is often the least crowded field you will ever compete in. Then look at the twelve locals open to the entire state, which you can enter regardless of where you live.
If the dates have closed, use the virtual at-large route
The Indiana locals run from July through March, so it is easy to miss yours by a month. The virtual competition exists for exactly that situation. Three cell phone videos in horizontal format, an 8 minute Zoom interview in front of five judges, a $30 American Heart Association donation and a $100 local competition fee. Registration and competition fall in early March, so put it in the calendar the moment you realize your local has passed.

Who competes
Slavic heritage in Indiana
Indiana's Slavic story runs through South Bend. Working-class Polish immigrants were among the first groups to arrive there in the mid to late 19th century, first building the Michigan Central Railroad line toward Chicago, then filling the factory floors of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, Studebaker and the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The community founded four Polish parishes: St. Hedwig in 1877, still regarded as the mother parish of Polish South Bend, then St. Casimir, St. Stanislaus and St. Adalbert. The first settlement clustered along Division, Chapin, Scott and Sample streets, and St. Hedwig's school closed the 1899 term with 1,025 pupils, the largest enrollment of any school in the city. If your family came from Poland, Ukraine, the Czech lands, Slovakia or the Balkans, you can represent that heritage here without leaving Indiana.

Where we are not the answer: we award no scholarship money, and Miss Indiana does. We have no talent phase, so a trained dancer or musician is leaving her strongest asset unused here. And we are not a route to Miss America or Miss USA. If your goal is one of those stages, enter an Indiana local, or the virtual at-large competition if the dates have closed, and use us alongside it rather than instead of it. Indiana genuinely is one of the easier states to find a way into, so it would be dishonest to talk you out of trying.
