Beauty Pageants in Texas: Houston and Dallas Contests and How to Enter Miss Texas

Texas runs more pageants than almost any other state, and the entry rules are not the same twice. Here is what each Texas system actually requires, which one fits your age and situation, and how to compete from home if the travel budget is the part that stops you.

Rules below are taken from the Texas state organizations' own eligibility pages, checked July 2026.

The short answer

What beauty pageants can you enter in Texas?

Texas has four main routes. Miss Texas is the Miss America preliminary and takes women 18 to 28 who first win a local title. Miss Texas USA is the Miss USA preliminary, takes women 18 to 27, and lets you apply directly with no local win required. Ms. Texas Senior America competes at 60 and older. Below those sit dozens of independent local pageants in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Fort Worth, each with its own rules.

Before you apply

Four things that decide which Texas pageant you can enter

Almost every rejected application comes down to one of these four. Check them before you pay an entry fee.

Your age on a specific date

Miss Texas follows the Miss America calendar: no older than 28 as of September 30, 2026, and no younger than 18 as of September 1, 2026. Miss Texas USA runs 18 to 27. Ms. Texas Senior America starts at 60, and some years allows a woman who turns 60 within two weeks after the pageant. The date matters more than your age today.

How long you have lived in Texas

Miss Texas asks for proof of at least 120 consecutive days of Texas residency before the competition. Miss Texas USA asks for three months of permanent residence prior to the pageant date. Both accept an alternative: full-time enrollment at an accredited Texas college, or full-time employment in the state.

Marriage and children

This is where Texas systems split. Miss Texas USA changed its rule for the 2023 pageant, so married women, divorced women, pregnant women and mothers are now eligible. That change does not extend to Miss Texas Teen USA. Miss Texas, on the Miss America side, still requires contestants to be unmarried and without children.

Whether you need a local title first

Miss Texas is a two-step system. You compete for a local title such as Miss Fort Worth or Miss San Antonio, and only local winners advance to the state competition. Miss Texas USA takes direct applications. Ms. Texas Senior America takes applications to the state pageant. Knowing which system you are in changes your whole timeline.

If you want to start now

How to enter a Texas pageant this year

Local titles run on a fall and winter calendar, so the practical answer depends on how much runway you have.

1

Read the exact eligibility page

Not a summary, not a forum post. Each Texas organization publishes its own rules page, and the age cutoff dates change year to year.

2

Match the system to your situation

If you are married or a mother, Miss Texas USA is open to you and Miss Texas is not. If you are over 28, look at Mrs. Texas, senior pageants, or an open online pageant.

3

Budget the real cost

The entry fee is the small part. Coaching, gown, interview wardrobe, headshots and travel to the state competition city are what the total actually looks like.

4

Enter something now to get reps

Stage time and judged feedback compound. An online pageant costs nothing, runs on your schedule, and gives you photos and a placement to put on a pageant resume.

Represent your heritage

Texans with Slavic roots

Texas has long-established Polish, Czech, Ukrainian and Serbian communities, from the Panna Maria settlement in Karnes County to the Czech towns of the Blackland Prairie. If your family came from any of these countries, you can enter representing it, wherever in Texas you live now.

Side by side

Texas pageants compared

The same woman is eligible for some of these and barred from others. This is the honest version.

Texas pageant Who can enter How you qualify What it costs Best for
Miss Texas (Miss America) 18 to 28, unmarried, no children, US citizen, 120 days in Texas Win a local title first Local fee plus gown, talent and coaching Scholarship money and a talent you can perform
Miss Texas USA (Miss USA) 18 to 27, married women and mothers eligible since 2023, 3 months in Texas Apply directly to the state pageant Entry fee plus wardrobe and travel The route toward Miss Universe
Ms. Texas Senior America 60 and older, Texas resident Apply to the state pageant Set by the state pageant each year Women 60+ with a talent and a philosophy of life
Houston and Dallas local pageants Set by each organizer, often narrower than you expect Apply directly to the local director Varies widely Stage time without leaving your metro
MissSlavic (online) 18 and up, Slavic heritage, any height, any marital status Upload photos, no local title needed Free Competing from Texas without a travel budget

Where we lose: if you want scholarship money, a live stage and a title that leads to Miss USA or Miss America, a Texas state pageant is the only thing that does that, and no online format substitutes for it. We also require Slavic heritage, so if your family is not from one of these countries, the Texas locals are your route. Where we win is access: no travel, no gown, no local title, and no age ceiling.

Frequently asked

Texas pageant questions

The four largest are Miss Texas, the Miss America preliminary; Miss Texas USA, the Miss USA preliminary; Miss Texas Teen USA; and Ms. Texas Senior America for women 60 and older. Underneath them run dozens of local and independent pageants across Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and Fort Worth, each setting its own eligibility rules.

You cannot apply to Miss Texas directly. The Miss America system requires you to compete for and win a local title first, such as Miss Fort Worth and Coppell or Miss San Antonio, and local winners then advance to the state competition. You must be 18 to 28, unmarried, without children, a US citizen, and able to prove 120 consecutive days of Texas residency.

Miss Texas USA takes women 18 to 27 who are US citizens and have lived permanently in Texas for at least three months before the pageant, or who attend school full time in the state. Since the 2023 pageant, married women, divorced women, pregnant women and mothers are eligible. Unlike Miss Texas, you apply directly rather than winning a local title first.

Yes. Houston hosts local preliminaries in both the Miss America and Miss USA systems, plus independent and cultural pageants run by community organizations. Because local directors set their own rules, a Houston pageant may have an age band, residency rule or entry fee different from the state competition it feeds into, so read that specific pageant's eligibility page.

Yes. The Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex runs local titles feeding the state systems, along with independent pageants. Dallas is also a common host city for state-level competitions, which matters for budgeting, since travel and hotel for the state week is usually a bigger line item than the entry fee itself.

No. Neither Miss Texas nor Miss Texas USA publishes a minimum or maximum height, and contestants are not measured to qualify. The 5 foot 7 figure people repeat comes from runway modeling, not from pageant rulebooks. A small independent pageant can write its own rule, so check that pageant's own eligibility page rather than assuming.

You compete at 60 and older, what the organization calls the Age of Elegance. Texas has allowed contestants who turn 60 within two weeks following the pageant, and asks for current Texas residency of at least three months. The competition scores a private interview, evening gown, a 35 second philosophy of life statement and a talent presentation.

It depends on the system. Miss Texas USA has accepted married women, divorced women and mothers since the 2023 pageant, and Mrs. pageants are built for married women specifically. Miss Texas, on the Miss America side, still requires contestants to be unmarried and without children. Open online pageants, including ours, set no marital rule at all.
