Beauty Pageants in New York: NYC Contests and Miss New York Requirements

The four largest are Miss New York, the Miss America preliminary; Miss New York USA, the Miss USA preliminary; the teen divisions of both; and Ms. New York Senior America for women 60 and older. Underneath them run local, independent and cultural pageants across New York City, Long Island and upstate, including heritage competitions such as the New York Rose, each setting its own eligibility rules.

You compete at the Miss New York state competition, and you can reach it two ways. Either win a local title at one of the preliminaries that run from early fall through the end of February, or apply for an open title, an all-digital application with a resume, an essay, a talent video and a virtual interview. No local competition is required for the open route.

You must be no younger than 18 as of September 1 and no older than 28 as of September 30 of the competition year, a US citizen, female, unmarried and not a parent. Local directors set their own age bands, residency rules and entry fees, so read that specific pageant's eligibility page rather than the state one.

No. Neither Miss New York nor Miss New York USA publishes a minimum or maximum height, and contestants are not measured to qualify. Miss New York USA states outright that there are no height or weight requirements. The 5 foot 7 figure people repeat comes from runway modeling, not from pageant rulebooks. Yes. Miss USA removed its upper age limit, so Miss New York USA accepts any woman 18 or older who meets the citizenship and New York residency rules. This is a real difference from the Miss New York side, which still caps entrants at 28 as of September 30 of the competition year. If you are past 28 and want a state-level title, the USA side is your only route of the two.

The Miss New York competition splits its score five ways: private interview 30 percent, health and fitness 20 percent, talent presentation 20 percent, evening wear 20 percent, and on-stage interview 10 percent. Interview is the single heaviest phase. Miss New York USA scores three phases instead, interview, swimsuit and evening gown, weighted equally at a third each.

Not in New York. The Miss New York USA state pageant has been held at a hotel in Parsippany, New Jersey, which surprises most first-time applicants and matters for your travel and hotel budget. Miss New York, on the Miss America side, moves its host city and announces the venue each year, so check the current dates before you book anything.

Miss New York published a 15,000 dollar scholarship for its winner, with 5,000 dollars to the first runner-up, 2,500 to the second, and smaller awards down through the top ten and to non-finalists. The teen division awards 5,000 dollars to its winner. That scholarship structure is the main practical reason to choose the Miss America side over the USA side.
