What beauty pageants can you enter in Maryland?
Maryland is one of the most crowded states in this series, alongside Alabama and Louisiana. Three organizations run a state title here and each one sends its winner somewhere different. Miss Maryland is the Miss America preliminary, run by the Miss Maryland Scholarship Organization, with its state final staged in June at the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown and a local circuit underneath it that includes Miss Bel Air, Miss Frederick, Miss Montgomery County, Miss Washington County, Miss Carroll County, Miss Frostburg Elks Derby Days and Miss Diwali. Miss Maryland USA is the Miss USA preliminary, directed by D&D Productions out of Clermont, Florida, with its 2026 state final held at the Hilton Parsippany in New Jersey. Miss Maryland Volunteer is the third route, feeding the Miss Volunteer America pageant based in Jackson, Tennessee. County fair and independent pageants run alongside all three. The practical effect of having three systems is that there is no single Maryland answer to any question about age, marital status or how you get in. There are three answers, and they genuinely conflict.

Four things that decide whether you can enter in Maryland
Maryland publishes plenty, but it publishes it in three places that do not agree with each other. These are the four differences that actually change whether you can enter and how you should prepare.
Three organizations, three different age caps, and they are not close
This is the thing to settle before anything else. Miss Maryland follows the national Miss America band: 18 to 28, stated as no younger than 18 on September 1, 2027 and no older than 28 on September 30, 2027. Miss Maryland USA has no upper age limit at all and states eligibility by birth year instead, as born during the year 2008 or before. Miss Maryland Volunteer sets its own cap at 26, written as no younger than 18 by 07/29/27 and no older than 26. So a 27 year old in Maryland is eligible for two of the three state titles and locked out of the third, while a 40 year old is eligible for exactly one. Tennessee was the only other state in this series with rival lineages, and it had three age caps too, but Maryland is the first where all three organizations publish their bands clearly enough to compare side by side.
Two published scorecards, and they weight talent differently
Maryland is the second state in this series to publish how the judges actually score, and it is the first where you can compare two competing systems. The Miss America side publishes private interview 30 percent, fitness 20 percent, talent 20 percent, evening wear 20 percent and on-stage conversation 10 percent. That is the identical weighting Wisconsin publishes, which tells you it is the organization standard rather than a state quirk. The Volunteer side splits the score four ways at 25 percent each: private interview, fitness and wellness, talent, and evening gown. The difference matters. On the Miss America side, interview plus on-stage conversation is 40 percent of your result against 20 for talent, so preparation beats performance. On the Volunteer side talent is worth 25 percent and interview is worth 25 percent, so a trained musician or dancer keeps more of her advantage. If talent is your strongest phase, the published math points at the Volunteer route.
Maryland runs a cycle ahead, and its locals still publish a retired age band
Both Maryland state organizations are already posting 2027 dates while several states in this series are still on 2026. That is fine once you know it, but it makes stale figures harder to spot. The bigger problem is what some Maryland local programs still publish. At least one county local states a band of at least 17 by your first local pageant but no older than 24, and must not turn 25 before December 31, alongside single, never been married and no children. That is the pre-reform Miss America rule. The state organization now publishes 18 to 28 with no such marital condition attached to the age rule. Four years is a lot of eligibility to lose to an out of date web page, so check the age band on the state site rather than on the local flyer, and ask the local director to confirm it in writing before you pay anything.
The Miss USA state final is not held in Maryland, and the pageant is run from Florida
This is a travel and budget fact rather than an eligibility rule, and Maryland is the second state in this series where it applies. Miss Maryland USA is directed by D&D Productions, headquartered in Clermont, Florida, and Holly Plank of Baltimore was crowned Miss Maryland USA 2026 on July 26, 2026 at the Hilton Parsippany in New Jersey. If you enter the Miss USA side here, competition weekend means traveling out of state plus lodging. The Miss America side stays home: the June final is at the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, and Gianna Romero of Joppatowne won it in 2026 competing as Miss Washington County. On residency, the two sides differ again. Miss Maryland gives three alternatives, each requiring 120 consecutive days: live in Maryland, or work full time in person in Maryland at a minimum of 40 hours a week, or be enrolled full time at an accredited Maryland college or university. Miss Maryland USA asks only that you be a resident, a full-time college student, or hold full-time employment of 40 hours a week in the state, with no duration attached.

How to enter a pageant in Maryland, step by step
Three state routes means three different application processes. Start by ruling out the ones your age or your schedule closes off, then pick between what is left on talent and travel.
Check your age against all three Maryland systems, not one
A single number decides a lot here. If you are 27 or older, Miss Maryland Volunteer is closed to you and the other two are open. If you are over 28, only Miss Maryland USA remains, and it has no upper limit at all. If you are 18 to 26 you can choose freely. Read the band off the state organization site for the cycle you are entering, because Maryland is already publishing 2027 dates and several local pages still show a retired 17 to 24 rule.
Decide whether talent is your strongest phase
This is the one place where Maryland gives you a published, numerical reason to choose. Talent is 20 percent on the Miss America side and 25 percent on the Volunteer side, while interview is 30 percent on the Miss America side and 25 percent on the Volunteer side. Miss Maryland USA has no talent phase at all. If you have trained for years at an instrument or a dance form, that difference is worth real points. If your strength is speaking about a cause you know inside out, the Miss America weighting rewards you more.

On the Miss America side the normal path is a local title, and the Maryland circuit runs from Miss Bel Air and Miss Carroll County through Miss Frederick, Miss Montgomery County, Miss Washington County, Miss Frostburg Elks Derby Days and Miss Diwali. The state organization also publishes a direct entry route, so a candidate whose county has no local or whose dates clash is not automatically shut out. On the Miss USA side there is no local title to win: you apply to the state pageant directly.

Miss Maryland competes in Hagerstown in June, which is in state. Miss Maryland USA competed in Parsippany, New Jersey in 2026 and is administered from Clermont, Florida, so plan for a drive or a flight plus lodging. Who competes
Slavic heritage in Maryland
Maryland has one of the deepest Slavic histories on the east coast, and it is concentrated in Baltimore. The first Polish immigrants arrived in Fells Point in 1868, and the community grew through Canton, Locust Point and Highlandtown, with many working the docks for the International Longshoremen's Association. Ukrainian families settled the same corridor from the late 1880s, founding St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church in 1893, and over its 250 year history Fells Point has been home to Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Czech and Slovak families alongside Irish, German and Jewish ones. The volunteer-run National Slavic Museum sits in Fells Point today. If your family came from any of those countries, you can represent it here without leaving Maryland.

Where we are not the answer: we award no scholarship money, and the Maryland state organizations do. We have no talent phase, so a trained musician or dancer is leaving her strongest asset unused here, and on the Volunteer scorecard that asset is worth a full quarter of the result. On the Miss Maryland USA side, yes. The organization applies its never married and no children rule to the Teen division only, and Miss USA nationally permits women who are married, divorced or parents. Miss Maryland Volunteer is the opposite and states plainly that a contestant must not be married, nor ever have been married, and must not be a parent or adoptive parent.
Maryland has never won Miss America in more than a century of competing, though Virginia Cha was first runner-up in 1990 and Keri L. Schrader and Marina Harrison both placed third runner-up. It has one Miss USA title, Mary Leona Gage in 1957, and 25 placements overall. Nana Meriwether became Miss USA 2012 by succession after finishing first runner-up.
