California runs two full state systems plus a senior pageant and hundreds of local titles, and the entry rules are not the same across them. Here is what each California pageant actually requires, which one fits your age and situation, and how to compete from home if travel across the state is the part that stops you.

What beauty pageants can you enter in California?
California has four main routes. Miss California is the Miss America preliminary and takes women 18 to 28 who either win a local title or enter directly as an At-Large contestant. Miss California USA is the Miss USA preliminary, takes women 18 to under 28, and lets married women and mothers compete. Ms. Senior California, part of the Ms. Senior America system, competes at 60 and older. Below those sit hundreds of independent and cultural pageants across Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Sacramento, each with its own rules.
Before you apply
Four things that decide which California pageant you can enter
Almost every rejected application comes down to one of these four. Check them before you pay an entry fee.
Your age on a specific date
Miss California follows the Miss America calendar: no older than 28 as of September 30, 2026, and at least 18 as of September 1, 2026. Miss California USA takes women who are at least 18 and under 28 before January 1 of the competition year. Ms. Senior California starts at 60. The cutoff date matters more than your age today, so read the exact date each organization publishes.
How long you have lived in California
Miss California USA asks for California residency of at least three months before the competition weekend, or full-time enrollment at a California school. Miss California, on the Miss America side, asks for 120 consecutive days of California residency, and accepts full-time in-person employment or full-time enrollment at an accredited California college as an alternative.
Marriage and children
This is where the two systems split. Miss California USA lets you compete in the Miss division if you are married, have been married, are pregnant, or are a parent. Miss California, on the Miss America side, follows the national Miss America rules on the Miss division. The teen divisions of both systems remain closed to married contestants and mothers.
Whether you need a local title first
Miss California gives you two doors: win a local competition, or enter the state competition directly as an At-Large contestant. Local titles come in Limited form (a specific city, county or region) and Open form (anyone living, working or studying in California). Miss California USA and Ms. Senior California take applications directly. Knowing which door you are using changes your whole timeline.

We also require Slavic heritage, so if your family is not from one of these countries, the California locals are your route. Yes. San Diego runs local titles that feed the California state systems, along with independent pageants. San Diego and Los Angeles are also common host cities for state-level competitions, which matters for budgeting, since travel and hotel for the state week is usually a bigger line item than the entry fee itself.
No. Neither Miss California nor Miss California USA publishes a minimum or maximum height, and contestants are not measured to qualify. The 5 foot 7 figure people repeat comes from runway modeling, not from pageant rulebooks. A small independent pageant can write its own rule, so check that pageant's own eligibility page rather than assuming.
You compete at 60 and older, what the organization calls the Age of Elegance. Ms. Senior California is the state preliminary of the Ms. Senior America system, and the state winner advances, expenses paid, to the national pageant. The competition scores a private interview, evening gown, a philosophy of life statement and a talent presentation.
It depends on the system. The Miss California USA Miss division accepts married women, divorced women and mothers, and Mrs. pageants are built for married women specifically. The teen divisions and the Miss America teen rules remain closed to married contestants and mothers. Open online pageants, including ours, set no marital rule at all.
